I can see that. Most younger people dont realize that KSU's football past was MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than ISU before he came around.

What he was able to do there is amazing to me.

I've argued this very point before. KSU on paper should be a tougher place to win than ISU, yet he's managed to be a consistent winner while he's been there. He turned the absolute worst program in college football into a perrenial winner, and continues to win with less than stellar recruits.

Give Snyder the resources that a Nick Saban has, and he'd be unstoppable.

I've always wanted to see some similar stat's on football program spending bang for the buck. This would be something like football budget dollars per win.

Historically, I wonder how Iowa State, with it's relatively small football budget, has done compared to other schools.

Exactly right. The only time youll ever see me bag on Snyder is through frustration losing to him. Otherwise I have tremendous respect for him and what hes done there. However, he needs to retire and go away now.

I don't like the idea of judging a coach based on the counter-factual; we simply have no idea that Snyder would do better at a place like Alabama or some other school with more resources. College football is littered with coaches who had amazing success at so-called "lesser" schools and then flopped when given the resources afforded to them at big name programs. Rich Rod, Dan Hawkins, Dennis Franchione, etc. come to mind. Maybe Snyder would have joined them, but maybe he wouldn't; nobody knows.

And if we're going to "handicap" coaches based on their program's history, then what about guys like Barry Alvarez, Hayden Fry, Chris Petersen, etc.?

Snyder is an amazing coach, no doubt, and I have nothing but respect for the man. But if someone's going to claim that he's the best coach ever based on "what could have been", I think there are a lot of coaches with 200+ wins, multiple conference titles, and a few national championships that would take issue with it.

Maybe, maybe not. There have been numerous coaches who could take lower level teams and make them good and then once they hit the big leagues, they sucked. Rich Rodriguez is a good example. I don't know if it's knowing how to deal with the different mindset of the 5 star types or dealing with the ******** around a program like Alabama, but there is something there. Of course, guys like Saban, Miles, Meyer, etc seem to be able to work everywhere but some coaches aren't like that.

Having said that, based on body of work, Snyder makes a case. KSU is an awful place and the program was complete junk before he got there. Not only did he turn it into a respectable program, he turned it into a program that competed for actual championships and BCS births. That's like us competing for the Big 12 and BCS bowls which some on here think is impossible.
