Perhaps, it's a point that can't really be disputed a ton.
Yet we all know many kids will listen to about anyone over their parents sometimes. A coach they respect and love playing for says "Go here and I'll be your coach again", that's pretty significant.
I'd kinda think if some school was giving my parents a job to get me there, I'd go to the school that wouldn't hire them. | |

This is not against the rules. Frankly, I'm surprised it is not done with a little more regularity than you actually see.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

But the bolded part may lend itself to my argument why I think the likelihood of unethical behavior is higher in the case of parents. If your parents said, "Hey, they're hiring me and paying me enough that I can buy you a 60 inch plasma, PS3, and an Escalade. Go here and you'll have all that. If you go somewhere else, all I can provide is our used 20 inch TV, our old Sega Genesis, and the beat up El Camino out back." (Ok ... the last part was just for humor.) Would you still want to get away from them!

The point some may be making (myself included) is that maybe it should be either against the rules or have to go through some sort of NCAA/third party review before it can happen.

So, yes. | |

I do love how Happy Gilmore and American Pie were brought together in one little thread. A perfect way to reach the hump of Hump Day.

How is hiring a former basketball player to help with recruiting and b-ball operations unethical? Just because he's become an AAU coach? I don't think that's unethical at all. Jake Sullivan is linked to this program long before he coached Harrison Barnes.... completely different.

This is really not surprising. Ed Manning was driving a truck before he became an assistant coach at KU.
Of course Danny Manning was a freshman that year.

It becomes unethical if the only reason he is getting the job is to get the recruit to come to the school. If he wouldn't be considered for the job without the star recruit, or if there was not job to start with, then that is unethical.

Of course Danny Manning was a freshman that year. I don't know what Ed Manning's profession was immediately prior to being an assistant at KU but I do know that he was a professional player in both the ABA and NBA. My guess is that he met Larry Brown while playing. And by the way, Larry Brown took Ed Manning with him as an assistant when he went to the Spurs after KU. So your insinuation that KU hired a "truck driver" as an assistant to get his kid to sign a letter of intent is a little disingenuous. Ed Manning had some basketball savvy to bring to the table when KU hired him.
