I feel sorry for Missouri
Okay, you think that it is tough to be a Cyclone fan, imagine being a Missouri fan. It is arguable that Missouri has the worst athletic program in the Big 12.
They have only 3 Big12 titles which is the fewest in the Big12 and have only 2 national titles in the school's history which ranks 10th among the Big 12 schools. Aside from their recent success in football which has resulted in two north titles (no conference titles and no BCS appearances), they are among the worst in the Big12 in almost every sport.
For comparison, ISU ranks 6th in the Big12 for most national titles at 13 (Nebraska ranks 5th!) and has won 3 conference titles in three years for a total of 10 conference titles.
So if you could, would you trade with Missouri to have a semi-successful football program and no success anywhere else? I, for one, would rather be Cyclone with the number two wrestling team in the nation, a top25+ women’s basketball team, and a promising outlook for our men’s basketball, gymnastics, and hope for the future for football, volleyball, and Cross Country.
1000th Post!!!! Yippee!! Some hoped that this day would never come, but I’m still here and not banned.

Re: I feel sorry for Missouri
I agree- I would much rather have what we do, hard as that may be to admit when I'm watching a football game. I do have to say, though, that my opinion is that the volleyball, XC and gymnastics programs are a hell of a lot further along than our men's basketball team is. I would put MBB under the "hope for the future" category and those other three in the "currently achieving and getting even better" category.
True and Valiant
I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I wouldn't mind watching Chizik and the boys play in the Big 12 title game two years in a row or play in two straight New Years Days bowls.
Their basketball program is right where we are, too.
Is this a trick question?

Re: I feel sorry for Missouri
I get the argument. Would you rather be good at the marquee sports, or have a athletic program that is solid in several sports?
I think being good at lots of sports because it's more fun. I like having options and generally seeing ISU do well. I think that most alums probably feel that way, even if they don't follow the other teams that closely.
Does that casual fan that otherwise doesn't have much ISU spirit care? Probably not. If the program is going to appeal to a wider audience, we need to do well at football and basketball to get the money to properly fund and continue success in our other programs...
I don't drink the Kool-Aid, and I am done making excuses. Only keeping it real... -

Is this a trick question? We have won two Big12 BB titles and are way ahead of them in recruiting. Sure we are at the same place right now, but our program is on the rise and their's is stagnate.

Re: I feel sorry for Missouri
If you have success in football and a smart athletic department, other sports can thrive. So, I'll take some success in football.

I feel sorry for ISU.
Missouri's football program is currently better. They defeated us this year and had a better record. Their football program has historically been more successful than has ISU's program. Missouri has 15 conference championships and 2 conference division titles compared to none for Iowa State.

The Missouri basketball program beat a ranked team, USC today and finished higher in the conference than ISU during 2007. The Missouri basketball program has also won more conference titles than has ISU.
I really don't care about most of the non-marquee sports so I'll repeat my answer that I feel far more sorry for ISU.

I only feel sorry for Missouri because I can count the number of their returning starters on one hand...

Re: I feel sorry for Missouri
Football is king.
I would make that trade in a hearbeat.

Re: I feel sorry for Missouri
I don't feel bad for anyone with a top 10 basketball team and a team that just beat a ranked team last night in basketball.
