Re: Dirty, Nasty Play in the OU game...
I might view this in a different way than a lot of people because I ref intramurals, and I make a lot of calls that prevent things from escalating and causing retaliation. But when something like that happens where the shot has nothing to do with the game play and is just to injure or start something I'm thinking about tossing them. Then the fact that it was a shot in the pills makes me for sure toss him.
If it's while someone is driving the lane for a shot and you step in there to hit him and make sure he doesn't get a shot off that's one thing, but this was a shot that had nothing to do with the play of the game, and was taken on a defenseless player who wasn't expecting to have any contact, in addition to that it's a shot below the waist. That's not even allowed in boxing where the sport is to beat the crap out of the other guy. As far as I'm concerned basketball is a non-contact sport and when there is deliberate contact like that there's no room for it, and the below the waist contact makes it even worse.
For the people who wouldn't eject him:
When did it become okay in basketball to take cheap shots to your opponent outside of any form of game play regardless of if it was a shot at the jewels? If a deliberate shot away from the ball not affecting the play of the game doesn't call for an ejection, what does? Are you saying that as a part of the game it's okay to come down the floor and lay a shoulder into your defender? Would you at least have given him a technical?
