Football In State vs Out State Players
I've heard the argument that we need to get all out of state players to win at Iowa State.
Check out the roster from the 1995 and 1997 National Champion Nebraska Huskers: Football - Roster & Bios - Huskers.com—Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site= Football - Roster & Bios - Huskers.com—Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site
They had players from all over, but they made it work with a lot of in state kids.
Why can't the same thing happen here in Iowa? Our population is nearly double Nebrakas...

Re: Football In State vs Out State Players
A big problem with this is that we usually get the second tier talent in the state. The state of Iowa does have some talent, but it seems that we don't get the best of it.

What you have heard is that if we don't get the best ones, we can get just as good (or better) out of state.
Or, you have heard that we can't win with only instate talent. There just aren't enough Big XII caliber players in the state.

No I have heard that here on CF if I knew how to quote from another thread I would show you. People have said, among other things, we shouldn't waste our time recruiting the state of Iowa

Re: Football In State vs Out State Players
That was also in '95 and '97. Id pretty much say the game is quite a bit different. I'm not trying to knock Iowa high school players because I was one of them. But many out of state players are a lot better and more athletic/quality players then ones from Iowa. But that doesn't mean you can't recruit Iowa because there are great players in Iowa, but you really can't build a team off of just Iowa players.

Re: Football In State vs Out State Players
You need some instate players. Mac may have had too many, Chizik not enough. There is nice mix of kids you need.
When talking Nebraska remember Nebraska kids dream of playing FB for Nebraska and they have a big walk on program because of this. They can talk a kid into walking on to save a scholarship then after year 1 or 2 deciede who deserves a scholarship. In Iowa that is harder to do because of having two schools. If one school offers the other has to do the same, so they dont lose out the kid. Omaha also has its share of good FB players in it, which help Nebraska and at one time ISU some.

top dog in the state would be great but far from it we are a distant second

We were one of Sam Bradford's top choices his senior year until OU offered.

Re: Football In State vs Out State Players
The problem with in-state recruiting for Iowa State is two fold.
1. The amount and talent of recruits in the state of Iowa is not that great.
2. Iowa State for the most part are going to be the second option for instate kids. Most of them will rank Iowa above Iowa State as their choice to play.
We can use Iowa kids to fill a spot here and a spot there but it should not be the focus of our recruiting. We will be better off spending our recruiting time in Texas, Florida, Ohio, Penn, and California. Their 2nd and 3rd teir players are better then most of the top guys in the state of Iowa.

I just don't buy that book of goods.
I agree you need to go out of state.
All I'm trying to say is that Iowa has some quality too and it's just a matter of finding it and going after it.

Re: Football In State vs Out State Players
Nebraska gets all their talent tons of walk on Iowa and ISU have to split it
