Youth of the Big 12 - Updated

I updated the chart to show ONLY conference games so we can see who is actually playing now that the real season has started. Sure this is skewed and doesn't reflect who scores. But it does show that we aren't getting our young guys into the game like the other schools... Chart goes youngest to oldest with the top 8 by mpg, tiebreaker is just the top 5.

I'm not sure what you mean. Iowa State appears to be only 1 of 2 teams that is playing 4 underclassmen in their top 5 mpg.

Wow--that is pretty promising. We are young and not deep, with most of our upperclassmen serving as role players. Agree that we should be trying to get our young guys in the games at this point in the season.

We are also one of 4 teams with three or more seniors in our top 8 and only have one freshman in the top 8.

How many of those teams have upperclassmen that have been with the program for more than 2 years?

Not many... There are alot of transfers in there...

I'd like to see this being measured in production coming from underclassmen...losing Petersen, Haluska, and Thompson is not the same as losing Jerrells, Dugat, and Rodgers.

Actually nearly every single team on there has at least one uppclassman that has been with the program for more than 2 years.

I did something similar yesterday, using games through Tuesday. I did it for both class year (Fr=1, So=2, Ju=3, Sr=4) and experience (using Yahoo!Sports numbers).

I calculated the percent of minutes played by each class year (or exp year), and multiplied it by the class year (or exp year) and summed it up.

For example, in conference play, ISU has 13.6% of total minutes being played by freshmen, 51.6% by sophmores, 8.1% by juniors, and 26.7% by seniors. Thus, their "experience" based on class years is: (.136 * 1) + (.516 * 2) + (.081 * 3) + (.266 * 4) = 2.48. The higher the number, the more "experience".

I must be missing the point. We're not losing a hell of a lot, and some of these schools who are playing young guys will be losing them to the NBA.

I don't think it's an accident you are doing top 8. By using the top 8 you can prove your point.

Do the top 5 and you get a different story.

Being that only 1 of our top 8 has played D1 basketball more than 2 years, there is a pretty good argument that we are a very inexperienced team.

Top 8 was a natural drop off for almost every team.

I do not think Kansas will be losing too many of their current players to NBA next year. Their talent is down.

I'm working right now on percentage of ppg coming from upperclassmen from big 12 teams...will post it as soon as I'm finished...I'm only using the upperclassmen from cybsball20's top 8 lists.

I think Oklahoma is the only team in danger of losing any underclassmen with Griffin and probably Warren.
