'09 Kansas = '01 Iowa State?
A lot of people have mentioned the parallels between ISU's first round loss to Baylor in the '01 Big 12 tourney and KU's loss today but I think there are some other parallels there as well.
Neither team was expected to compete for the conference based on who they lost the year before. Both teams depend very heavily on the play of their point guard and can look terrible when that PG has a bad game. ISU finished up their conference play with a blowout loss @Texas, an uninspiring home win against Nebraska to clinch the title outright, and a first round tourney loss to Baylor. KU gets blown out @Tech, sleepwalks through most of their home win against Texas to clinch the title outright, and loses to Baylor.
So what happens now? ISU kept their 2 seed while people are speculating KU will drop to a 3 or likely a 4. I still thought ISU was going to the elite 8 but I was slightly less than objective there. I could easily see KU losing their first round game or I could also see them making a run to the Sweet 16. If they get shipped to Boise look out...

I'd be more concered if they get shipped out to Portland and play a western school. I don't think that happens.

They're definitely not getting KC. Maybe Minneapolis?
Also, I read some quotes from Bill Self today that said they looked like a tired team. Isn't that pretty much verbatim what Larry said?

I didn't see the end, but KU lost? Haha. I told Collins he was going to lose in the first round, I didn't know it would be in the conference tourney. Awesome.

I think the parallel between 2001 ISU and 2009 KU has a very serious flaw. The 2001 ISU team was still a very experienced team without Fizer. Four of the top 5 scorers, Tinsley (14 ppg), Rancik (13 ppg), Shirley (10 ppg), and Horton (11 ppg), were all seniors. Sullivan was the only freshman in the top five scorers at 11 ppg. The 2009 KU is much younger than that.
Because of the youth, KU losing to Baylor doesn't surprise me that much. It also wouldn't surprise to see KU lose in the first round of the NCAA tourney, or get on a roll and make the Final Four. It's hard to tell how young, very talented players will react. The ISU loss to Baylor was surprising because of the experienced team, and unfortunatley, indicative of worse things to come...

KU probably has more "talent" than that ISU team did but ISU probably worked together better. Those are some really balanced scoring numbers.

Kansas is getting shipped out most likely out west. Be interesting to see if they end up in Boise or Portland. It's going to be interesting to see what happens if Missouri wins the title if KU falls below them as well

There's a big difference between a conference tournament and the NCAA's. One's essentially an exhibition show for fans, the other one's for all the marbles.

Let's hope this means the beginning of a loooong era of sub-mediocrity ahead for KU, like it did for us...
Haha, they're just doing a comparison of '01 ISU and '09 KU on ESPN2 halftime report now!

Re: '09 Kansas = '01 Iowa State?
Yeah, and the worst thing about Kansas losing is now all the talking heads compare KU's loss to Baylor to our loss to Baylor, and talk about how we lost our NCAA tournament game...
I would honestly rather go through another season like the one we just finished than ever be reminded about or have to think about frakkin' Hampton.

Yeah, ESPN rubbed my face in that one with their neat little graphic comparing the two losses. Luckily, I didn't hear them mention our following loss to "they who shall not be named".
