I've got no problem yelling and screaming and an occasional poke in the chest. Its not my cup ot tea but some peole do get motivated by fear and embarrasment. I think its a very dysfuntcional approach when you bring in personal matters. Mangino is way out of line and KU needs to dump him. Obviously the players are not responding to this approach anyway. Lots of talent and very poor results.
I find it ridiculous that in his interview he tried to frame it as "some kids can't handle the discipline". Discipline is making a kid run until he pukes, not making light of his brother who got shot, or his alcholic father. If a kid gets a penalty for showboating, or shows up late for a meeting...make him run, leave him in the weight room a few extra hours, or chew his *** about something other than his personal problems.
when a player dropped a pass, he reportedly told him that he would send him back to st. louis to get shot with his "homies"... this just days after that player had let it be known to the team that his brother had been shot... and the players are too sensitive. yeah. sure.
Huh...I'm waiting for someone who's been thru any type of military basic training to chime in. If you think Mangino's words were tough.
I've been through basic training and while I remember some very...interesting things said to me. I never remember any DS saying things like Mangino said. Also, comparing the millitary and college football is a bit of a stretch.
I don't really have a problem with the things Mangino said or did, they are things that have obviously worked for him. If this environment is too much for these kids to handle then why do they stick around? No one is forcing them to play football for KU. All coaches have different ways to motivate, and there are going to players who can't handle it, while some players thrive under it. Bob Knight is the perfect example, some guys can't handle his style of coaching while others became stars because of it.
The only bigger turnoff than finding out a woman smokes, is finding out she's a Husker fan.
Mangino's defense of the players being a bunch of lying crybabies speaks volumes about the problem. The first statement he makes he tries to belittle them. The guy obviously has little or no repsect for his players. If he were in the military he would be acasualty of friendly fire. If KU keeps him they deserve another losing season IMO.

Is it "making fun of" or showing them the reality of the situation they are facing? Who knows?
Either way, anyone who would rip into a player after dropping a pass in a game about "do you want to go back to the hood and get shot like your brother?" is a defective human being. It wasn't like Mangino said this because he was skipping class or slacking off or something, he said it when he dropped a pass in a game.
