Apologies if this idea is buried in one of the conference realignment threads, but I don't recall seeing it.
Beebe seems to not be saying much on any of the rumors going around, but his counterpart on the west coast is sharing a little more information about possible talks about a strategic alliance between the Pac 10 and Big 12. The driving force appears to be a joint TV deal that could negate much of the clout that the Big 10 currently enjoys. The Pac 10 wants a partner in the deal and the Big 12 looks to be the best option. I could see the right kind of deal keeping both conferences intact. If the Pac 10 really wanted to play hardball, they could ditch the Rose Bowl tie in with the Big 10 and work out some type of bowl sharing agreement with the Big 12.
It'll never work, it just makes too much sense. I would love to see it. It has been talked about for a little while and it involves Fox and not just the regional Fox sports channels.
This is our best bet and it does appear likely-but still hard to believe.
If this goes well enough, it will create a moment of pause for those schools that are projected to leave. That moment of pause will be very telling for many reasons. It could actually lead to (gasp) actual Big 12 expansion

I am not sure expansion is in our best interest either, at least long term. It would be purely for TV sets, which initially seems enough. But, large conferences have a history of breaking up (WAC) and we don't need a future breakup and realignment either. Status quo with a TV deal with the Pac10 or a Big10 bid seem best. Or, a small expansion. Grab Arkansas to secure Mizzou along with the TV deal and then Grab Utah before the Pac10 does...or if CSU will lock in CU then take CSU (would go against everything I believe about expansion but if it holds CU then might be worth it).
We do have the Pac 10/ Big Xii Bball challenge. So thats a start. Plus there is so much useless crap on the Bin 11 channel minus Saturdays in the fall, 2 conferences sure would make it easier to fill the time.
They would have to alternative channels just the Big 11 does for football, but most of the Pac's games are at night and ours could be day games mostly. Plus ESPN/ABC would still take the top games from our conferences every week like the 11 does.
It's almost too good to be true. They would have the whole eastern seaboard, all the southwest, Texas and half of the midwest if things stayed as they are right now. Thats a lot of viewers.
