This is a good post by a West Virginia fan on the Iowa State scout site. I think this has plenty of merit.

The best thing for the big east imo is for a football/basketball split contingency plan. If the big ten announces it wants Missouri, and the Pac 1O goes after the other big 12 schools the big east should split and the football schools should
aggressively go after Kansas, Kansas St. Iowa St.....and Nebraska if they are not taken by the big 10. Also go after Memphis and Temple if we cant get Nebraska.
That leaves a BCS worthy football league consisting of two leagues that are reall not that big of a logistical nightmare.
Consider the west bracket:
Kansas
Kansas St
Iowa St
Memphis
Lville
Cinci
..................Maybe Nebraska
East
Syracuse
Pitt
Wvu
Uconn
Rutgers
South fla
................. Maybe Temple.
Thats a BCS worthy football conference and TOP 3 in basketball. We have huge tv markets.

The schedule would be easy to set up, each team plays 3 from the other conference and theres a championship game.
And the basketball....WOW 2 games each against kansas, kansas st, memphis, pitt, uconn, syracuse, lville,
and cinci? WOW.
And the TV markets alone support our own TV network
