ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
So, I was reading a Gazette Online article about UI, ISU and UNI athletics and the fact that U Iowa is self-sustaining - so, out of curiousity I took a look at the operating budgets released by the Board of Regents for fy10 and fy11. Should college athletic departments be self-sustaining? | GazetteOnline.com - for reference
And: http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townn..._dc=1275670544 - Board of Regents budget from the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier
Interesting fact about Iowa State is that with Pollard in charge, they have increased capital projects, increased donations and foundation support, increased athletics budget AND decreased University support - last year by $450,000 - the total University Support for fy10 is projected at $1,613,607 and a little lower in fy11.
The problem is the Big 12 support of $9.7 million in fy10 and $9.82 million in fy11.
The Mountain West Conference TOTAL BCS revenue, however, was $8.5million - for the entire conference. Obviously TV revenue and other conference items come into play, but the share per school certainly would not come close to the Big 12 $9.7 million figure.
The sobering reality is that while ISU has been getting very close to economic independence from the school that would all come crashing down without the Big 12 and while some on here have simply worried about losing great coaches, if we miss out on a BCS conference altogether, we'll have to start dropping entire sports again unless we find our own T. Boone...
Not to mention all the economic impact the program provides to Central Iowa. Politicians who aren't interested in this are not looking out for their constituents - spending $1.6million and less going forward to get nearly $10 million is a pretty darn good return on investment...

ISU cannot drop any more sports. Like UNI, they are at the minimum to participate in D1.

There would be across the board budget cuts but we would move on. It sucks but it's not the end of ISU athletics.

The problem I have with these numbers is that they under the current MWC structure. Adding teams would increase revenues and exposure to the conference. Adding a KU alone in basketball would do wonders to the MWC.

Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
I'd estimate our budget would drop about $5M initially if we switched to the MWC and the MWC became a 16 team league.
Very hard to say though...could actually grow also...especially if the league establishes itself as a major player.

Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
Iowa just recently stopped counting state dollars for athletics and it took some changes in accounting to do it. For a century or so before that, no. Don't believe the BS.

Good info...some would like to believe that this is not that big of deal. Clearly it is.

Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
How much money per year does the athletic department pay to the school for tuition, room, board, fees, and books?
I would imagine that number is much more than the department is getting back.

Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
You know what else is sad....
A couple of weeks ago when the Big12 ADs and Pac10 ADs where in Arizona talking about an alliance. We were all on here thinking at worst case our new TV contract would be 13-15 Million.
Even without the PAC10 we would have still been in line to increase our TV revenue by about 5 million per year. So you could even look at it like we "were going to be around $15 million per year total B12 Rev down to at best 3-5 million in the MWC.
But here is the scarey part.
We may not even end up in the MWC. Then the only options left are Conf USA or some sort of Big East Football Membership to replace Notre Dame/ Rutgers or whoever else leaves, MAC or Independent.
In my opinion (which doesn't mean crap) If we don't get into the MWC then we go Independent b/c there isn't going to be any TV Money in Conference USA or MAC anyway.
Then wait for all this super conference crap to fall through and be there when it all gets put back together again. I seriously can't wait until Mich, OSU, Penn St. Nebraska and Notre Dame are all whining because they are all beating up on each other. Same goes for the rest of supers.
Independent schedule of possible teams to play until we land somewhere.
Army
Navy
Notre Dame (if not in Big10)
Iowa
Nebraska
Mizzou
KU
CU
K-State
Minny
Wisc
Ill
Cal
Florida State
Rutgers
Washington State
Not sure how this would work out scheduling wise and if its even doable financially. We would obsiously need some home games. So we would have to work out Home and Homes and a TV deal for the Home games. Road games would be covered by the "Super Conference Jack holes" Trick is to play some bad bcs teams to gets some wins and find a way to get some major games (Neb, Mich, Florida St etc.. to bring in some money) I know there is flaws with this, but I don't know if i can handle anything lower than MWC
Probably be better than joining the MAC or CUSA though.
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum.... -
Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
I would also think it is essential to add a Houston, or another Texas market.

Re: ISU budget effect of Big 12 vs. MWC
The problem is not only that our budget may be going down, but it would be doing so when many others are going up. Some of the payouts for new TV contracts with the mega conferences could produce some huge increases for other schools. That would greatly increase the budget difference between ISU and the average BSC school.
