Somehow I hope the Big 12 stays together. Who cares if we have North schools leave, just replace them, even if you have to go to teams like TCU. Football is moving south more and more every year. NU and MU are putting themselves in a tougher position recruiting southern athletes. The Big 10 has won one NC championship in the last 12 years. 11 warm weather schools and 1 Ohio State team in the last 12 years. Football is becoming a warm weather sport and you need to be in position to recruit athletes from those states.
Say Nebr leaves, the PAC 10 takes 6 south schools but CU and Mizzou get left out. That leaves 5 B12 schools and I think that means the buyout clause for leaving the B12 would be able to be in-forced? That should leave some cash for the remaining schools to reform the B12. You have the Denver market and KC-St Louis market to start with. That is not much but maybe enough to draw some MWC and Conf USA teams to make it more legit and increase market share.
Pac 10 doesn't go to 16 unless the Big 10 goes to 16 first, but in the eventuality that the Pac 10 does go to 16, the Big 10, ACC, and SEC all go to 16. Mizzou and CU, and quite possibly KU land somewhere desirable. If ISU can't squeeze a Big 10 invite, they're left in nuclear winter. Apocalypse sets in.
Actually, the most realistic scenario is that once the B10 starts expanding the Pac10 will be the first to jump to 16. Then the b10 will invite additional members and will likely get ND to jump in because they see the writing on the wall. Once we have Pac16 and Big16 the SEC and ACC will go to 16 too. Then the nuclear winter sets in.
The next announcement will be that the 4 super conferences have set up a 8 team post season playoff to determine a national champion. Each super conference has 2 entries into the tournament. Which is mainly why ND agrees to join the B10 because if they don't they are out of the national championship picture completely. BCS goes away and the Supers make even more $$$ in TV revenue while teams like ISU are shut out completely.
As you said, Apocalypse sets in. Best chance for us is to get a B10 invite when they go to 16.
So who blinks first? Supposedly PAC10 already is ready to go with 6 invites. Who are the B10s 5? Besides NU and Mizzou there hasn't been much smoke for other schools. Except of course they want ND. If NU does announce soon, then PAC10 goes to Pac16 because of the "ultimatium". PAC 16 is the first super conf. Does the B10 just take longer to announce? I think there is a lot of bluffing going on and B10 is pulling the strings to force ND's hand.
EDIT: actually the format of the tournament they set up is TBD. Could be 16 teams. Since each super will likely be divided into 2 groups of 8 the top 2 in each division get invites? That is 4 per conference. Let the conferences determine invitees? Let the polls decide? There is another option which is probably unlikely. How about 16 teams with 12 from the supers. Top team in each division with an at-large ... next best representative from the conference. That is 4x3=12 out of 16. Then 4 teams left from everyone else? Teams like BSU, TCU, ND (if they don't join). Might be a political compromise to keep out anti-trusters but ruins the goal of keeping all the potential $$$ for themselves.
Yes, B10 is pulling strings and allowing Pac10 to jump to 16 first to force ND's hand. Other schools for B10 include ISU and Pitt is a likely candidate. Syracuse. Rutgers. UConn are others. Including NU, MU, ND that leaves only 2 more. Say Pitt and that leaves only 1 more. I hope its ISU but don't think the odds are in our favor.
Looking at current Big Ten schools, Rutgers and UConn do not seem like a fit. I claim it is a Delaney smokescreen. He is after the Big 12 in the end.
I could see that. It would keep travel costs down for the Olympic sports and make for some great rivalries. The CIC would get a strong Ag school (MSU isn't really that strong). But no TVs. Would a national Notre Dame make up for that? I think they could afford that b/c ND-ISU would bring in a national audience, as would OSU-ISU Mich-ISU, PSU- ISU etc... and not beacuse of ISU.
Wow, this situation changes on a minute by minute basis. Lots of good info just published here: Orangebloods.com - Are we in the final countdown of the Big 12?
Looks like B10 is squeezing even harder on ND. If Pac10 -> 16, and B10 then expands to 16 it appears B10 is looking east if even more than what I just said. Maybe no Mizzo or ISU and as many as 4 eastern teams to raid the Big East and ruin the conference for ND. Wow but could just be bluff. Also talks about possible anti-trust action if there are 4 super conferences. Wonder it that might shut down the whole migration to super movement?
