    Is geography dooming ISU?

We all know football is driving the conference realignment, but don't you think one the biggest factors putting ISU in a hole when it comes to the conference realignment is geography?
Big 10 - well we know ISU is not going there, even if so, before Nebby - would be the furthest west team, from a major conference perspective it would be the best fit geographically
Big East - Currently would be a western outlier
PAC 10 - not even close before the current B12 schools
MWC - Closest is maybe Colorado State?
WAC - trips to Hawaii? (see MWC - ISU = outlier)
Conf USA - furthest North and West
    SEC- not even worth mentioning
    ACC - see SEC
MAC - might be the best fit geographically - but also one of the weakest conferences in FBS sans sunbelt

heck the best fit geographically is the Missouri Valley - this is actually the only conference we are not on the fringes of geographically - but of course that makes no sense from a football perspective (or other sports really)

The only way geography is dooming us is that we are not geographically close to a major TV market. If the Big East contains USF, If the Pac-10 wants to travel from Oregon to Texas, it is not travel that is a hinderance. It's television sets.

true, it may not doom ISU, but it sure doesn't help.

    Re: Is geography dooming ISU?

You need to learn your geography - we'd be an outlier even in the MAC. We'd be the westernmost school in maybe the smallest FBS division by nearly 300 miles.

Geography sucks for ISU, but at the end of the day, it is what it is. If Iowa had 10 million people living in its borders no one would care that we were isolated because we'd be a revenue generator. As it stands, Iowa's lucky they've been in the Big 10 for nearly 100 years, because if they were in our situation they wouldn't be looked at either (not a slam, just a simple case of fact).

I do not disagree with you, I simply said the MAC is likely the closest compared to the Big East, MWC, or conference USA - the likely homes for ISU. Iowa is lucky they were part of the big 10 since nearly the beginning - yes they would likely be in a similiar position, although Nebby with their football history is able to overcome this. And Texas with the power and people does as well. I am just saying it sure does not help, and may be a reason why KSU likely will find a home easier than ISU.

Geography is one problem we are dealing with...but there are many others as well, including history.

Bingo....if geography was the biggest factor, Nebraska would not have gotten an invite to the Big 10 since they share similar geography.

if we could move Ames to Osceola it would be a bigger player in the KC market.
