Dan Bebbe's emails
Documents show inner dealings to keep Big 12 alive | College Sports News | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News
Intresting read. The Dallas Morning News obtained emails Dan Bebbe sent to Texas Tech and his "Case For The Big Conference" Presentation, pointing out the Pac-10's "more disparate" revenue sharing situation, pointing out the most years USC gets twice of what Washington State gets.

Re: Dan Bebbe's emails
I really haven't figured out what was gained, what was promised, etc. But this part concerns me greatly
"On June 15, the day after the Big 12 officially survived, Beebe wrote Texas Tech president Guy Bailey, at athletic director Gerald Myers' request, and detailed an agreement by five of the remaining universities to guarantee Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma at least $20 million in revenue for 2012-13, the first year of a new media agreement, in order to retain the schools in the league. "
Why do WE have to guarantee those 3 anything? Shouldn't the conference office be making guarantees (I know that it's really semantics there).
But to me, that reads like our slice might be smaller to guarantee them a larger piece.

I was gone for a few days when this happened and am playing catchup. I thought we had a new media deal in place that was likely to pay us nearly double what we currently pull. And realized that Texas and the other big players likely got more, but didn't realize ours was potentially "revisable". But this suggests that there is no guarantee of our money, only the big 3's?
Maybe the timing of the email, and the fact this is trying to woo the south to stay with incomplete promises, makes this look worse than the actual deal?

No, there is no guarantee of money from the new TV deal. Those were projections offered by Beebe based on deals received by the ACC and SEC. There is no TV deal yet either, which will be negotiated in the Spring of 2011 - this is for FOX only. The ESPN deal runs until 2016 I believe.

Re: Dan Bebbe's emails
Ok... just so I have things straight.
We have no deals. No guarantees. Could potentially get thoroughly screwed, and we signed on through 2020?
Not complaining, yet. Just clarifying.
To be fair - I suppose the possibility is there we come out smelling like a rose.
Edit: I understand the north pretty much signed commitments through 2020. Did the south?

Almost certainly we'll come out somewhere in the middle which will certainly be better than where we are now, and infinitely better than where we would have been if the Big 12 fell apart.

Re: Dan Bebbe's emails
If I was a University President or Athletic Director I would have Beebe email my yahoo or hotmail account then the information wouldn't be available for the public.

Edit: I understand the north pretty much signed commitments through 2020. Did the south? The four remaining North teams and Baylor signed the commitment through 2020. I'm not sure if the other schools have or not - Lew Perkins at KU says that all the schools signed the agreement, but for sure it's those 5.
Correct. No deals, no guarantees, but the FOX deal in 2011 should bring more $$ to the Big 12 schools than the previous deal.

Re: Dan Bebbe's emails
Ok - thx guys.
The only thing that really, really bothers me is this commitment contract - and only if it's the lowesome 5 and not all 10.

If somebody did that to hide the info and it was discovered, they could be in serious legal trouble. Open records laws still apply even if it isn't your work email address.

The fact that the two major TV contracts didn't line up was ludicrous, and something that's been that way since well before Beebe.
If Fox pays a boatload just to bridge the gap (2012-16), as it is assumed, then both the FSN and ESPN/ABC contracts will expire in spring 2016 -- making the next set of negotations (spring 2015) quite lucrative, since everything will finally be up for grabs at the same time.
