Ames' redevelopment plan for Campustown opposed | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com

Looks like the City of Ames actually wants to do something. Wow. There are so many crappy buildings in Campustown that need demolished and people need to get their hands out of the sand and realize their buildings are eyesores!!
Welch is a dump. It has really fallen over the past few years, Saddens me,
Welch does suck it needs to be demolished and redone.
As a current student I would love to see more places to eat and and more apparel stores and bars. And who reads comic books anymore? Personally, and speaking for the majority of students here, Mayhem Comic store is more of a joke to us on campus than anything else. Lets redesign Campustown with the input of us students and our fellow alumni!!!
For those owners who do not want to sell, I wonder if the city or lane 4 have looked in to an option of possibly building a new building, to the south of the fire station and offer relocation or something like that. This will get the businesses that lane 4 and the city want in campus town, keep the old ones, and make the place look cleaner and newer.
I'm all for the redevelopment of Welch and even making it a Ped Mall, but the idea that it needs to bring in Alumni is laughable. It's a drunk fest and should stay as such forever. Main Street is for those older alums and townees.
I'm all for redevelopment but don't force it down student's throats either. Don't try and spruce it all up and not allow for bars and night clubs. Besides going to WAS every now and then I haven't been to a campustown bar since I graduated over 5 years ago. I know how much I loved them-Lumpys, Mickeys, Peoples, let students still enjoy places that can be fun, cheap, and easy to have a good time. Hopefully the city will still want 5-6 bars atleast in this new plan. Matthew Goodman's business' have always thrived on the bar scene, so having him on the council has to help out those chances.
I also imagine the person who sold their buildings was the Champlain lady, because after the People's fiasco and it becoming Papa's or whatever the hell it was called she could use the money. That building took a lot of time, a lot of money, and basically no profit for her, thus leading to have to rent it to the Headliners guys.
Bars are always going to be the cash cow in campus town. That is where the money is always going to be and always will. I dont see why some people think the bars are all going to go away. These plans just seem to want ot make the place look better and offer more options.
Something like the KC Live area would be great. It was a big open courtyard area surrounded by bars and resteraunts where people of all ages (well, over 21 anyway) could hang out. It would be an awesome place for pregame pep rallys since it's walking distance to JTS.

Somebody really needs to do something about Cy's Roost's bathroom. It has gotten worse.
