I lived in Welch Bergman for my freshman year in 03. So obviously with this being 10 years ago all my info could be outdated but I would recommend switching. Rooms sucked with no AC, and terribly outdated outlets. I seriously had to duct tape my plugs in place and hope I didn't kick the cord at some point. I had friends in Helser and was pretty envious of their situation, I'd give that a shot if I were you.
Anyway, I lived in Roberts last year and I'm living in Birch this upcoming year. Honestly I was on the floor of Roberts that was apparently the crappiest floor known to man the past 30 years+, we only had a couple people that weren't Freshman so we all became huge friends. It really is what you make of it.
You will come to find living in an all guys building is immensely better because there isn't stupid **** going on to try to impress the ladies on the floor. There are girls in BLF, Linden, Oak-Elm, and MWL which is all within walking distance, it ain't that big of a deal to find poon... (protip: go to Conversations when it is cold outside, its under the all girls dorm and girls don't wanna go outside to get a meal so the ratio is a very good one).
The building is remodeling the Cornerstone hall desk area (where you get the mail and packages, play ping pong, play pool, vending machines). Every hallway was repainted this year with the exception of a couple because they wanted to keep their design. All the dens have been repainted. The building is getting all new carpeting in the hallways. Got a new hot water system this past year (its balls hot!).
BWR's hall council received an award from the DOR for having the best event (Masquerade Ball with Oak-Elm) and the best ongoing activity (BWR Challenge). BWR was also praised for being the most active building on campus and most efficient council. And you have a fellow CFer on council as well (ME )
Idk where you heard all the negatives of BWR but I would assume they lived in the Union Drive area...and would like to know which floor you were placed on
Also forgot to mention, the walk to Jack Trice and Hilton is a trillion times better. My Friley friends are always complaining after a game.
The rooms at Welch are waaaay bigger than MWL rooms.
Kinda sucked that it was all guys on our floor.
Probably wouldn't have been as bad if we hadn't screwed the pooch on the sister floor thing.
Overall I really enjoyed my time in Welch. Met some kewl guys that I'm still friends with.
They are replacing windows in Welch as we speak. And I was in Linden my freshman year and had classes all the way in design. I don't want to hear any complaints.
My advice to the OP, make some good friends your first year in the dorm and then get the hell out. Fredriksen is a good alternative.
Back in the dark ages, I dated a guy in Welch. His room was huge but I think it was a triple or something.
My son is in engineering and is in Helser, and he actually loves it there even though it is a dump. As far as the walk to class, I think the importance to him was that he was stuck all year taking Calculus at 8:00 a.m. four days a week. He liked being able to roll out of bed and be in Carver in three minutes if he had to. Welch is at least closer than MWL. Also, you can still just eat lunch at the UDCC if your lunch time is tight.
It's really like everything in life, it's the people that make a difference. You should be able to see the names and majors of others on your floor on Access Plus. Are there many other engineers on your floor? I know my son studied with the guys on his floor and that was important. And even if they aren't in engineering, you can meet people to work with in class.
