Welch Cassell alum here. (F03-S04)
I'm pretty sure I had the smallest two person room on the floor. But there were also some rooms that were huge! Also didn't help I had an anatomically correct drawing of a naked man on my ceiling the entire year. Was hot in the fall and spring even times in the winter if you were one of the unfortunate rooms that couldn't control the heat.
That said, my freshman year was one of the best I had with my time at ISU. Met a lot of great people and even though I don't keep too close of contact with many anymore, I won't forget them. We all went to/ had parties together. Went to the Leid, played intramurals, etc...
Really the dorms are going to be what you make of them. It's all up to you and your floormates how your year will go. Go to a couple of the floor events initially to meet people, leave your door open at all times when you are in your room, again to meet people.

I lived in Freeman my freshman year so I can relate--small rooms, no AC, etc. Don't worry about the social life your specific dorm--once you make friends at school you'll find where the parties are. I also agree with the earlier posts about where your classes are--in general, any class you have to go to will be a bit of a commute.

Cripes. When I was a freshman, I had to live in a mud hut in West Ames, with 43 other overflow students, and share one cold water faucet for drinking and showers. We would huddle around the AM radio for entertainment and play cards with a deck of 51 for fun. The long walk was the best part of the day. The "freshman 15" was weight *loss* instead of fat gained.
Kids these days...
Not adequate parking for your Volvo? 6 blocks too far to walk from your dorm to your furthest class as a frosh? The sidewalk isn't paved in gold leaf? No escalators from the classroom to your 800 count thread pillow?
Oh the huge manatee.

I had friends in Helser and was pretty envious of their situation, I'd give that a shot if I were you. Damn that's sad. I lived in Welch Bergman in 1991, and I didn't think the AC issue was so bad. There aren't that many extremely hot days in the school year. I don't remember the outlets being so out of date... I guess maybe they don't repair the rooms as often as they should?

I lived on Beyer for 3 years, and was a design major so I had the long walk to the design center, but it wasnt that bad. Beyer was great with some good sized rooms. As for it being an all guy dorm it doesnt matter, you have female dorms all around. Just get out and meet people, I had some awesome times living in the dorms, and ended up living off campus with friends I made in the dorms.
And yeah, apparently most of the people who are in my house are in engineering now that I look at the list. Maybe studying won't be too bad after all. -

A dorm is a dorm. You'll either make friends on your floor and wonder why you were ever worried about the rest of it or you'll make friends that live somewhere else, spend all your time there, and only use your room to sleep. Even in a worst case scenario, you're only there for a year, but really as long as you make sure to pull yourself away from the TV/laptop/Xbox once in awhile you'll meet people and have a good time.
Also, that walk won't be as bad as you think. One of the things that I actually miss the most out here in the real world, and it surprised me, is the long walks from MWL or Freddy to my morning classes. Even when it started getting cold in the winter, that 10-15 minute walk with my roommates or alone with my thoughts was an awesome way to start the day.

Also, I'm hearing some bad things about Welch, such as small rooms, old building in disrepair, more of a quiet community (I prefer an active and fun community), male-only dorm, etc.
Should I try and switch or does all this really not matter? GO GREEK!!!!!
