I was just placed in Welch... (Incoming freshman)

So in accessplus I put Friley as my top 3 choices and then MWL as my last choice. For some reason, I was put in Welch. Now, I'm going into engineering and that seems like a pretty long trip from Welch to the engineering and other buildings. Also, I'm hearing some bad things about Welch, such as small rooms, old building in disrepair, more of a quiet community (I prefer an active and fun community), male-only dorm, etc.

Should I try and switch or does all this really not matter?

I lived in Welch and was in engineering at the time. It's a long walk but I didn't mind too much. A lot of the community aspects depend on who's on your floor. I enjoyed living there and met some cool guys who are still my friends.

Better just drop out now but ya welch is a decent stretch of the legs from engineering. I've also been at ISU for 3 years and have never really hung out with anyone who's lived in Welch. So take that fwiw.

I've had friends that lived in welch, it's mostly upperclassmen so you will have fun, also don't worry about the male floor thing, you can always seek out the ladies. My friend lived on the top floor and the views were amazing. Also, there was only 1 CA per 2 floors so the parties there were pretty good.

This is the only reason I would consider switching. Most majors it doesn't matter where you live but engineers belong on the west side of campus.

Not sure switching will be easy given record enrollment expected and no new places to live. It will probably take several weeks into the semester before they allow people to switch. People were placed in temp housing (dorm common rooms ie. Dens) last year IIRC. They don't let other residents switch rooms until all those students have actual rooms to live in.

Not sure if there is a way to change room assignment before getting to campus but if there is I would recommend it for an engineer.

Will it matter that much in year one?
So much of that year would be general ed, so you're all over the campus anyway.

I would say wait a semester to find out if you like it, Welch is a long ways from campus in general not just engineering. He might find out that he likes it. Plus I was hardly ever in my dorm room (I just used it to sleep) so take that for what it's worth. You will make friends in your major and they will live in all types of dorms. After the semester a lot of people drop out so you can sometimes pick and choose after that, but I recommend giving it a shot. I can also ask my buddy what he thought of it (though I'm pretty sure he liked it) if you want.

I have a friend who lived in Welch during freshman year. He liked it so much that he stayed there the next year for sophomore year. But I think that it was mostly because he developed really good relationships with guys on his floor.

But, this is the best advice:
Anywhere you end up, it's going to be as good as you allow it to be.

This, I mean, I had a hell of a time in Helser of all places and I still love that dorm.

IMO distance to engineering buildings isn't a big deal at all. You're gonna be taking classes all over anyway since your a freshman. I knew a ton of engineers in MWL that did just fine as freshman.

Now as far as that other stuff, old small rooms, male only...thats up to you. I have never been in that dorm so I don't really have an opinion of it.

agree with some parts but with cyride, I don't think it would be that big of a deal.

What type of engineering he is in might help the decision. As far as projects and such concerns. As a comp E, I had to be in the comp lab in coover a lot which is by the water tower so that might be a concern.

I'd say try to switch, but it's not the end of the world. You might like it more if you are a partier as Friley isn't where the a majority girls are at if you catch my drift

Honestly, don't get caught up in the 'being close to class' thing.

My freshman year of ME, living in Helser. I obviously had classes in Hoover, Howe, Marston etc. But I also had classes in Lago, Physics, Gilman, Killdee...

Moral of the story...you will always be close to some but farther from others

Where did you live in Helser?

I lived in Storms Hall at the Towers south of campus, a long walk to campus, but enjoyed it a lot. My friends from dorm life are still my tailgate gang. We are all best friends years later. Welch may end up being a GREAT place for you. It's all in the people you meet.
