Cafe B, WAS and Capones were the good bars in 2008, I never understood the reason why everyone loved Paddy's, Sips and Mickey's... all were below average bars even at that point. Damn you're making me feel old; none of those were there when I graduated...which wasn't that many years before 2008.

I'm just saying this shouldn't be all that shocking. Obviously having roaches pushes it too far. But about the bathroom and food stuff, you can't have too high of expectations

A restroom in a college town bar should just be tile with a toilet and urinal. Each night just powerwash the damn thing.

Hey, if they can afford to rebuild and have to let someone else have a shot, we still win. New bars or old bars, they're going to do the minimum required to meet their health and safety inspections. It's simple economics; they'll only do enough to be in compliance with the law and keep people from going somewhere else to drink...which, given that they're located mere blocks from a boatload of thirsty college students who have few alternatives, is next to nothing.
Roaches are one thing, but I'd much prefer a bar with a little grime and "character" to some sterile, generic place with no history. And it's entirely possible to have a sanitary, well-kept bar in an old building; they don't need to tear the whole place down in order to clean it up a little.

It is so weird when you are on our beautiful campus then you cross Lincoln Way into another world.

Re: Paddy's and Sips seem to be having problems
You can have an old bar with "clean character."

I completely agree, but most of these campustown bars just have the grime (don't really think you can get away with calling it that) with little to no character, most of them only last for a short time and then are replaced by another dump. In no way are they sanitary or well-kept and some of them have pretty much trashed the building they are in. WAS is the exception here, that place has a bit of grime but also some character.
