Usually i spend around $300/ semester, but so far I am lucky and only have to buy books for 3 classes. So this semester i spent about $200.

Implemented the no buying books rule after my sophmore year...just used notes. I graduated on the 4.5 year plan.

I was about the same way. Spent like $700 on books the first semester. Never opened any of them and got back a whopping $40 from them all. After that I was on the 5 year plan, but didn't waste money on books at least, only tuition. But if I could have strung it out for one more year I probably would have.

$150 for 3 engineering books
I recommend you guys check out Chegg.com - Rent Textbooks, Cheap Used College Textbooks, Save Big and be Green.
You rent the books for like a 1/4 of what you pay for at the bookstores and you don't have to worry about selling them back, just ship em back to the company at the end of the semester. They provide you with a prepaid waybill for all the books, just toss em all in a box

I went in with 4 other guys most of the time and we split the cost of the books. Thing is, I don't think ANY of us ever read them.

Are they pretty quick about shipping the books to ya?

I did it last semester and I think that was the first time the company tried to do it. Chegg used to just be a marketplace for college students. I remember them getting the books to me pretty quick last semester. I just ordered mine yesterday and my estimated arrival date is the 21st, so I assume they're looking at a 1 week turnaround on orders.
I absolutely loved using it last semester. I spent $160 on 4 books, and bought my 5th book from UBS for about $170....

Spent about $110 on three books... for 2 classes.. However, for a total amount, that's pretty cheap for what I'm used to.
I will say, though, I refuse to sell my books back to the bookstore.. TOTAL ripoff. Online selling is the only way to go. That being said... I don't buy my books from the bookstore anymore, lol.
I have the option whether or not to buy a book or books for my com s 309 class. Not sure whether or not I'll buy any of them. I'm the type of person, however, that (assuming the book doesn't suck REALLY bad) needs to read along in the book to really get what I can out of my classes.

What is the story on the small business that buys books on Hiway 65 down towards Ankeny - it looks like it just opened up.

I bought books my 1st semester as well and spent over $700, once I realized they made better paper weights than reading material, I quit buying a lot of them as notes from online were just as good. I bought books my JR/SR years from half.com, cheap books and they were just the international versions, in other words no color pics and cheap thin paper, but exactly the same, all 6 books for a total of less than $100, sold them back to people taking the courses the next semester/year for more than I paid.

I try to use cheapesttextbooks.com. They search amazon and half.com and usually do a pretty good job.
