Do you support the Rec services renovations?

With the voting now open (thru Wednesday) for the rec services renovations (Vote - Online Voting and Election System - A Service of IT Services). I was curious to see how cyclone fanatic felt about it.

For more info:
ISU Rec Center Renovation

The classes of 2008 & 2009 will pay nothing, 2010 & 2011 will pay $20/semester and beginning with the class of 2012 they will pay $107/semester in order to cover the $52 million cost.

The Rec A/C will be done by summer 2009 and the whole project will be completed in Fall 2011.

It includes:
New Construction - State Gym Addition ($21 Million)
92,320 square feet of new space (1/3 the size of Lied)
Weight/Cardio room-16,000 square feet (double the size of the Lied
weight room)
Climbing wall (40 feet tall, twice as tall as Lied)
Leisure pool - Hot tub - Sauna
Lap pool - 25 meters
Basketball courts - 3 full length
Running track - 4 lanes, elevated
Multipurpose room (1)
Elevated walkway connecting Beyer Hall to State Gym
Handicap accessible

State Gym Renovation ($9 Million)
Replacement of basketball flooring
Personal training area
Multipurpose rooms (2)
Air conditioning (east and west ends)

Beyer Hall Renovation ($1 Million)
Multipurpose rooms (2)
Renovated locker rooms
Combined racquetball and squash courts

Lied Recreation Center Improvement ($3 Million)

I always thought I would have used the rec areas at ISU more than I did when I was a student. Not sure I would really have this high up on my list if I was still around.
If they have proof that it will get used then it would have gotten my vote if I was still a student.

I don't support it, but I'm not eligible to vote either.

The reason I don't support it is because i dont' see the need for a 25 meter lap pool. I like the idea of a new pool, but 25 meters just doesn't make sense. They are spending too much money on a pool that IMO isn't a great investment.

If they want to build a pool, I would hope they would build a competition pool that would benefit the women's swim program with the possibility of chance men's swimming would be brought back. This would certainly require a larger investment in the long term.

I can't vote, but I think that this facility is sorely needed by ISU. They will need it to compete with other schools for students. I wish that the athletic department could have been involved, but maybe they do some Beyer renovations down the line.

Do or do not, there is no try .....Yoda

Do you swim, I think ISU has one pool. IF its being used for womens swimming there are ZERO pools available. If there was 2 basketball courts(one for MBB one for WBB) wouldnt you want one for the students?

I'm curious as to what they are considering "renovation" amiong these buildings. If it's shelling them and starting over inside, that's a good idea. From extensive time in each as a student years ago, I'd have said that it was better to tear either State or Beyer down and start anew.

Well, except for Lied--and it wasn't done right the first time around.

I think renovations to Beyer and State are definitely needed, but don't know other than that. I will miss the old looks of the places though.

I work at the Leid Rec Center and this is all much needed! Beyer and State are "unsafe" and as for the large pool, hot tub and other things you might not think we need, to keep up with everyone else Iowa, let alone the big 12, we need it! I am a jr here at ISU and will pay a total of 40 dollars the rest of my time here for everyone after me to have a better work out center. I think it is a no brainer...

If you want something done, let people vote on it who do not have to foot the bill.

That said, I have no opinion.

Is Lied the gym north of Maple willow Larch? I helped pay for that one originally--it opened just before I graduated. I didn't have any problem with associated fees but I was kind of torqued that I was not legally allowed to use it after I graduated(even though I paid for it)

That said, you can't have to many gyms.

Re: Do you support the Rec services renovations?

I like the ideas, and agree that it needs to be done otherwise the needed improvements will only get more and more expensive, and the extra ones If I were a student I wouldn't be thrilled at the prospect of even more fees (anyone know if they are still charging that "temporary" energy fee?), but at times money just has to be spent. Maybe they can find some big donors or corporate sponsors to help offset the cost?

Edit: If this does go through I hope they make it look better than that one sketch they had. That thing did not go at all with any of the buildings in taht area (it was glass and very modern while the dorms and UDCC are all red brick with limestone and copper). Also be very cool if they could find a way to integrate something from Clyde Williams field into the building. Part of the footprint, a history of Clyde Williams Field, something. Try and integrate little bit of tradition into the building

Re: Do you support the Rec services renovations?

Yes, I've been known to swim a bit. Actually a lot.

The only reason why I think the 25 meter pool is a bad idea is because it should be a 50 meter pool with a diving well. The Lied should have had a pool included back in 1990. A 25 meter pool doesn't do that much, and it definitely doesn't help the Swim program.

If we are going to build a pool, do it right and spend the extra money. Purdue is a great example of what they should have done by way of a pool.
