Re: Housing, to go Greek or not?

If you want good grades I would highly suggest living in a Fraternity. All of them require you to get a 2.5 GPA your first semester.

I had a good situation in the dorms...I can't think of any rules that were really enforced. I even had pet rats.

I would agree that if you had a RA/CA that was an enforcer, that would suck.

Either option, frat or dorm, can be good. It's more about who you meet and what you make of your experience at ISU that's important.

I would suggest that if you want good grades, go to class and study. I know plenty of people in dorms and frats that have flunked out.

Re: Housing, to go Greek or not?

Personally, I had a great time in the Towers, 7th floor Lancelot and then moved Off Campus. I had the in with two Frats but passed on both. My reasoning was, I had been waiting to get out on my own and make my own decisions and do what I wanted for 18 years, why move into a frat and feel obligated?

That is my experience, however, whatever you choose make sure it is right for you.

Re: Housing, to go Greek or not?

I lived in the dorms my Freshman year, but pledged a fraternity that year. They wanted me to move in right away, but I stayed in the dorms my entire Freshman year. I then lived in the Fraternity for 3 years and finished my last semester in an apartment.

All three have good and bad. I enjoyed each location. The Greek life can be very rewarding if you are willing to invest your time. I do think that socially and academically, you are better off in the Greek system, but you can certainly succeed either way.

Networking and the amount of friendships you will develop that will be lifelong alos increases in the Greek life IMO.

FYI...I was a mechanical engineering grad.

Dorms. It's an experience you'll never forget, and you can always try out the frats during the second semester if you think its for you.

Re: Housing, to go Greek or not?

Dorms, I even had friends that were greek and regretted it. Dorms you are allowed to be an individual whereas it seems like the greeks have all these stipulations of being in a frat that pretty much make you just another lamb in the herd IMO. Dated a girl in a soriety once and 1 "house outing" was enough to bring out the stereotypes they try so hard to tell you aren't true. I think socially the dorms are better too unless you prefer to hang out with snobs then maybe the greek system is just for you.

I'm sure I just opened a whole can of worms but after turning a few of my freshman year friends into people I could no longer stand I don't have a high opinion of the greek system. That and dating a soriety girl too which ended up being a trainwreck, that whole system was not my cup of tea and I'm just scratching the surface of all the negative expiriences I have with that.

Re: Housing, to go Greek or not?

I lived in 5th floor Wallace in the towers at the Gilman ZOO. Dorms rocked and I wouldn't have joined a frat if my life depended on it. When I was there 87-91, frats were where the egomaniacs lived with the Dorothy Hamill haircuts and their rules and requirements for joining a frat were stupid. Only exception to that rule was the Farmhouse and I had a few friends in that house but pretty much avoided the rest. As a matter of fact our floor moto was the ZOO and we always got sweatshirts that looked like Zeta Omnicron Omnicron solely to make fun of the frat boy pretty boys.

That's the way it was my time there, so I don't know if it changed but you would be just as happy living in the dorms and then moving off campus if they are still like they were when I was there.

Question for the day: Can I still make season tickets work for FB and MBB if I move to Canada?

Whats the point of posting this if your just going to rip the Fraternity lifestyle. No one has ripped the dorm lifestyle once in there like you just did. Congrats.

Agree totally with your perception. I dated a girl who lived in a sorority and she wanted me to call and come see her even if I knew she wasn't there because it gave her clout if she got calls or boyfriend visits. That lasted for about a week before I told her to go find a different status symbol. Most sorority girls were pretty shallow and the types that their noses were so stuck up if they were outside when it rained they had a high risk of drowning......

Question for the day: Can I still make season tickets work for FB and MBB if I move to Canada?

Well rip on the dorms then if you don't like it. That's my thoughts on it and if you don't like them you have the right to say so too. That was pretty tame for some of the things I would really like to say about it.
