It's really too bad.

Well if the end of VEISHEA is what they want, we can end it with bang!

My wife and I were talking about how it seems like they don't even want the alumni to come back for VEISHEA anymore. Did anyone else get all of those "Virtual VEISHEA" emails? To me, it was more like, "Experience VEISHEA at Home from Your Couch Instead of Coming!" Lame. It's too early this year, the bands blow, there just isn't that feeling of excitement. The news isn't even covering it like they normally do. This is a sad time for this event.
Thank god for the spring game or I wouldn't have a reason to go to Ames for another 4 months!

I saw a lot of different types of VEISEHAs during my time in Ames. The first one in '00 was really lame because it seemed like half the students left town and there were more police officers shining a light in your face than people enjoying the festivities. People still complained about the bands then. They had Black Eyed Peas play before they hit it big and there were maybe a few hundred people in Hilton. The winner of the Battle of the Bands opened for them and was some sort of jazz ensemble. It was a brutal, brutal show.
Things started to get a little better every year as those that were automatically opposed to the "Dry VEISHEA" of the Jischke years graduated and the police were a little more lenient on house parties, etc.
Then in '04 everything seemed great and I thought that it was finally back to what it should be. Well, that of course turned into a riot and I was maced trying to walk home from the bars but at least I wasn't billy clubbed and cuffed like the guy next to me. All he was doing was walking away from everything but apparently not fast enough for some cop that was eager to bust some heads.
Two years later I came back as an alum when they had all of the events on campus that night and thought it was by far the best one I'd been to. It's too bad that it's on the downward slide again since I thought they had it figured out.

I completely agree... my first VEISHEA was the one two years ago, and I've been sufficiently spoiled by that one ever since. The fireworks were some of the best I'd ever seen in the state of Iowa, the atmosphere was electric, and everyone just had a good time. I didn't even go to the bars tonight because of the bitter wind out there.
I thought having the festival early was a bad idea. Larger chance for some last remnants of winter rearing its ugly head. Look what happened...
Wristbands were a horrible idea from the start. I didn't go see any of the shows this weekend.
About the only good thing was John Oliver, which was a great, great chance of pace after the past few years with Dave Attel and whoever it was last year.

Well, Veishea lives for another year. Even though it was cold, the bars and house parties were as active as ever.
Cops came and broke up our party at 3 this morning but instead of giving tickets they gave out free t-shirts and told people to go home. That's a pretty good way to clear out a party without starting anything.
We also had a log (firewood) thrown through a window on friday night. So overall it was an average weekend. It didn't feel like Veishea at all. It just seemed like a normal weekend which is really sad.

Rumor has it that administration is trying to phase out VEISHEA by forcing it to be moved earlier and earlier each year, until nobody wants to come and they cancel it. Reason supposedly being because its a bit of a money sink and the police are sick of it.

It's going back to its normal slot in 2010 (April 12-18) and 2011 (April 11-17).
There's also this from the VEISHEA website: "VEISHEA dates are set several years in advance in order to avoid religious holidays such as Easter and Passover, as well as to avoid conflicting with other large events in Iowa."

On top of missing VEISHEA, Yuri's Night is tomorrow, as well. Gotta party extra hard for missing that. Just promise me this. If we start a riot, make sure to take it downtown. I think it'd be funny to trash Ames' part of town instead of ours and give them a little return on their investment for all the anti-student BS they put us through. Thats a nice thing to say
