For that to be "phased out" is just sad.
I totally agree.

We were planning on taking our two year old to the parade this year but decided against it due to the weather. We took him around campus once during football season and had a great time showing him the fountain and the swans.

I'd be disappointed if they put the kibosh on VEISHEA.

One of the oddest moments, to me, was when there was a KISS concert in Ames on VEISHEA weekend in 1997 (the same year of the stabbing). Nothing like seeing a bunch of KISS Army folk going up and down Welch in full regalia.

KCCI news said that VEISHEA attendance was down by approximately 45,000 this year.

Several comments...

Moving it up so the weather is colder forcing people inside thing... the '04 riot was started after the police broke up a house party. Helloooooooo

I wasn't there but I'm sure bad weather encouraged more drinking, abliet it probally helped with the more important issue of out of towners not coming in. I chatted once with an officer who worked booking the night of the '04 riot, and a lot of people were out of towners. Most of those "2000 rioting students" they talked about on CNN were sitting on the lawn of Friley watching. It was a (relatively) small group doing the damage.

It PISSES me off that the administration is trying to kill it, given how well the last 2 years (3 years really... we had a number of spring celebrations the year VEISHEA was cancled... it was probally better than the VEISHEA in '04, sans the parade. Even though it wasn't VEISHEA)

I mean last year to me... well I described last year's VEISHEA as being about the perfect VEISHEA, really the embodyment of what it should be. That might be streching it a little but... it was a good VEISHEA. I'm sure there were a few incidents but nothing worth killing a tradition over. There has to be better solutions to this than getting rid of a long standing tradition of the university all together... yes for students it's mostly an excuse to drink, but they'll find that anyways. There is certainly more to VEISHEA than just drinking

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!

I do not like the fact that Veisha is more than likely earlier next year. Just have a big easter egg hunt on campus and everything will be good.

The first thing I thought of when I read the Daily this past Monday after VEISHEA was it sounded like a bunch of whiny little preschoolers crying over spilled milk. The entire student body (or whatever The Daily represents) was throwing a hissy fit over wristbands to see a band that no one cared about and then when the weather (which was almost solely the cause of low attendance) was terrible they got a chance to rip on how bad the festivities were this year. I refuse to believe if the weather was in the 70's last weekend there wouldn't have been the usual crowd. I was actually impressed with the parade crowd for such a horrid day.

Re: Ames Tribune VEISHEA Photo

100% agree- The weather was the buzzkill not the poor planning. Not a bad showing at the parade either, I was pleasantly surprised considering the elements.

I wish they would put the concerts back on Central Campus or by Friley and charge $5.00 to whoever wants to come in through 2 or 3 entry points.

(I realize that would take a lot of planning and security but hey, that's what they have over 350 committee members and an entertainment budget for!)

The year they finally quit having VEISHEA, I have a feeling there will be a riot in which all hell will truly break loose...and it won't be pretty at all

Actually, another point I thought was funny. The VEISHEA board has a few marketing majors on it...boy does that make the College of Business look great when you have such a crappy VEISHEA where they generated no positive buzz about the event itself and the only reason anyone heard about it was because of the wristband controversy. In my opinion, those people on the board shouldn't get a degree in Marketing for how crappy their real life application was....
