GSB Updates

Just wanted to update the students on the board on a few things discussed tonight at the meeting.

One of the things that we are going to try to get done this year is make Dead Week an actual "Dead Week". No classes, tests, or homework. Just a week to study before finals.

Most of the first two weeks have just been electing senators into Committee chairs, but it sounds like we have a good group that is interested in getting things done around campus.

There are also some new changes happening within the university - such as a complete overhaul of the budget system.

Anyways, that's it until we're back this fall.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

I don't plan to hold my breath on the budget.

It's not one that saves you money. It's just one that directs money to individual colleges in a more efficient way.

I'm all for a truly "dead" dead week.

I realize that nothing to do with college saves you money. Hopefully you guys can change some stuff for the better.

IMO, this idea is good and bad idea, for me.
It would be nice to have a full week to study and nothing to worry about. But, at the same time, sometimes i like having a final or two during "dead week." It spreads my finals out more and i finish up with a class before finals week, which leaves me one less thing to worry about.
It has its positives and negatives.

I would be more interested in no classes during Veishea. Or at least at the end of the week.

The above suggestion is subject to future Veishea committees not sucking.

We are required to attend classes during dead week ... Most profs who have a paper or project due allow us to turn it in that week/work with them on it n therefore don't make us sshow up for the finals time ... I also think the reason they require us to attend is to not promote binge drinking ... Attendence is reported to the registar offices n it effects our financial aid somehow ... Something like y should the school give you aid to get an education if your not attending class anyways ...

This is something written in the bylaws, and can be changed.

Personally (and I'm not on the rules committee, so it doesn't matter what I think), I'd be all for it. All it would mean is that they separate the final week of school and finals week with a week to study.

A lot of profs. don't listen and still assign projects/papers due that week, and it's really not a dead week.

Re: GSB Updates

Attendance is "required" during dead week for us because if the university were to make dead week any different than any other week of the school year, they would either have to tack on another 5 days somewhere else in the calendar, or risk losing their accreditation.

There is absolutely nothing different about dead week other than the fact that clubs cannot have meetings. Professors are encouraged to not give tests or new assignments, but they are free to do whatever they wish

edit- I say "required" because well outside of a handful of classes, we are not required to show up for anything. That, and I just bought my first pair of pull-ups today. I feel like such a big boy!

"I just back into town and I hear all this stuff, and Buster Olney is making my team up now and [Genske] wants to tell me who is going to pitch here. No one is going to tell us who to put on our team and no one on ESPN is going to tell us who should pitch for my team. " -Gardy

I don't have my list with me. They should be getting an updated list in the GSB portion of the ISU website. What's the last name - maybe I can tell you?

He's pretty good. I like him. I think he'll be a good leader for our student body.
