How is the fishing in Lake Laverne? My 9 year old grandson loves to fish and I am looking for a place where the fish bite and the scenery is great. Thanks for the opinions in advance.

It has fish. And swan poop. If at all possible, I'd go somewhere not there.

I don't recall EVER seeing someone fish at Lake Laverne in my time in Ames.

I've actually seen quite a few people fishing there - and they've got decent fish. But it smells horrible when you get close up, and I'd be afraid to touch the fish that come out of the water.

With all the crap that has been done to that little pond, if there is a fish in there, he's a hybrid of epic proportions that might not take to kindly to someone setting a hook in his mouth. Might not be pretty

Question for the day: Can I still make season tickets work for FB and MBB if I move to Canada? |

If there were fish in it I'm not sure I would touch them. Something about a pond on a university campus, by a major road, with city hills all around it that drain into it doesnt sit well with me.

I would suggest Ada Hayden just north of Ames. I've been there a few times and have caught quite a few fish.

If you fish there, make sure you have your fishing license. The ISU cops don't have much to do during the summer. If they see you, they will check.

I will admit to once wading across Lake Laverne, the long way, on a dare.
One of the swans came out and tried to kick the crap out of me, just before I got out of the water on the west side.
The summarize, the experience was "icky".

I would suggest going west of Ames to the Raccoon River near Fraser. Good fishing and scenery.

You'd be better off fishing at Long John Silver's. |

If you fish in Lake Laverne you might get your line snagged on remnants of goal posts.
