Tradewinds on Friday nights in the summer (late 90's early 00's). Great talent, always packed. Never heard of it until after I graduated and played slow pitch softball. Awesome times.
Personally...People's is and always will be my favorite even though its gone. I did like Cy's though...$1 Burgers was sweet. Also...$.01 (penny pitchers!) at MoJaz was always good news too.
The Zone was quite fun for a while as well (when they offered penny pitchers of Bud Light from 7-10 with $3 cover). Vividly remember talking to Lee Love outside the flooded bathroom.
Es Tas before the move. I went to the new place last summer and it just wasn't the same. The tacos were still good, the people were still great, but it had definitely lost its hole-in-the-wall charm.
Here was my usual Friday night bar routine: Mickey's for FAC. Then head to Element for a cheap fishbowl and sit out on the patio when it's nice. I've heard they charge cover and have crappy live music now though. After the fishbowl, usually Es Tas, old or new. And if we were really feeling crazy: finish out the night at Outlaw's before getting a gyro on Welch or in my last semester, a slice of Jeff's pizza. That's how you do a Friday night in Ames. Fun and cheap!
Mojazz and Mickeys if it is Thursday. Lumpys if it is early in the night on Friday. Towards the end I spent most of my time at Sips or Outlaws. Hard to have a favorite when the bars and the crowds at bars changed so much.
