I was looking over the Ames City Council minutes concerning the new subdivision west of Ada Hayden. It discussed various utilities reaching the new development and annexation by the city. One thing that caught my eye was the mention of relocating Fire Station #2 to North Dakota Ave. That's the station on Welch Ave. IMO that spot would be awesome for a big bar. Also, without the station there, the city COULD close down that first block of Welch and make it pedestrian only. They could widen the sidewalks and allow for outdoor/sidewalk seating. This would be a huge improvement for the area.
I highly doubt this will happen because ISU pays Ames allot of money for fire protection and they will not be happy to see that fire station moved further away.
Most of the reason Ames has all the stations and equipment they do is because of ISU. Ankeny isn't that much smaller now than Ames and they just built a second station and still rely heavily on volunteer help. Ames has three stations with full time crews for each station and their stations are filled with equipment that makes Ankeny's look like toys. Largly because of ISU
