I think that's just part of having gone to a school in the South (where the football tradition is much stronger, regardless of how the program is at any given school), and probably the chance to go back and relive their college years for a weekend. You're still in your 20s, right? It's a lot easier to get up and fly across country when it's just you to worry about. The logistics are more difficult when you factor in spouse, kids, cost, etc... Not to say it isn't done, it just takes more planning.
I also think that by offering students so many things to do during Homecoming week, it builds the base for tradition and desire for students to come back once they graduate.

Re: Homecoming
I'm 31 and like I said, Honecoming is centered around the game down there, if anything the Homecoming parade is a bigger deal... Friday noon, there is no school at all in the county that day and they get roughly 200,000k there.

Re: Homecoming
There are plenty of people from around the country who fly in for games like homecoming. Buy yeah, homecoming is definitely severely lacking in tradition. Really homecoming is no different than any other game, because ISU is all about the tailgating anyway. It might get people to look at the calendar and say "hey I'll come back for the homecoming game" but homecoming in and of itself is nothing special.

I don't think anyone is opposed. What do you suggest we do to accomplish this?

Football (from pee wee leagues on up) just just a Bigger thing in the South. That's all there is to it. At Iowa State especially, the game is secondary because for so many years (and even still somewhat today), no one cared about the game. Change that mentality and you might change Homecoming. I hate to get back to the Just Win train of thought (hello dead horse!), but that's what has to happen. And I truly believe we're getting there, but it'll take time.
So I'll echo Cylent: how do you propose to change Homecoming to be more appealing to alumni? Have you offered suggestions to the Alumni Association about what can be done? I guess I've never really had an issue with Homecoming, either as a student or as an alumnae, but there's always room for improvement.

Re: Homecoming
Well, for starters a large event/pep rally such as Gator Growl (UF), Pow Wow (FSU), or Orange Peel (Ok St).
