The whole fraternity vs. non-fraternity thing is really interesting. Personally, I don't know why somebody would join one unless they have trouble making friends. I understand some people have those problems and am not knocking them but its a little confusing to me.

I decided to join because it was 30 guys that I'd want to hang with a lot. Its like customizing my own "dorm" floor in a senes. Plus you build friendships with other guys in other houses.

They want networking opportunities after they graduate? They're not for everyone, but they can be great if people give them the chance and look beyond all the stereotypes.

Phi Delta Theta would be a good one to check out, had a great experiance there in the early 90's, and the house has always been considered a good one on campus, and a real good one on the National Level.

Re: Greek Getaway-Frats
Don't let all the naysayers bring ya down... Personally, I would have never thought of going greek, but fortunately had a friend that told me I could go get a free bite to eat with him and a couple other guys. I was bored so I figured why not? When sitting with these guys and meeting them for the first time, things just hit off and now one guy that rushed me could possibly be a co-worker/manager of mine next year.
What I am getting at is for me, it opened up opportunities both on and off campus. Yes, we get our reputation from some bad apples, but some good things go unnoticed. I would say give it a try and if you don't like the guys or don't get a good feel, then oh well, not the end of the world.
I am definitely pro-greek, but have nothing against anti-greeks, like it has been said, it isn't for everyone. But I would at least give it a try and if you meet some guys you could feel yourself living with the next few years, then by all means give it a shot.
Let me know if you have any questions on anything, I would be more then happy to answer them... I am a senior, so somewhat on my out, but have seen a lot of stuff here at ISU.

Try Sig Ep, not sure about the ISU Chapter, but I had a great experience at Northern Iowa Oh God, not the can't call a fraternity a frat argument. I was an ATO at a different school and our regional leadership consultant fed us that "you wouldn't call your country a...." line and we all laughed at him. Please.

I know people on here have been hating on dry houses, but don't let that discourage you. I'm in a dry house and we have a wet house right next door where we are always welcome. Problem solved -

Re: Greek Getaway-Frats
The house I was in (graduated last year) was a large house and with that number of guys, you naturally have a variety of people with a variety of interests and backgrounds. While it was a dry house, I would say that about 1/3 enjoyed going out often, 1/3 here and there, and 1/3 did not drink but still were very active in other activities on campus and other dry activities on the weekends too. One benefit that I liked about being in a dry house was that while we still enjoyed going out (bars/parties etc.) we didn't have a bunch of random people we didn't know in our house which keeps the house cleaner and naturally less thefts. Basically just find a place where you feel comfortable with the people and the situation and out will have a great time
