Housing Advice Please
Acceptance later came about 3 months ago. I am down to Larch and Friley to room during Fall 10 and maybe Spring 11. What do you guys think?
P.S. I am also thinking I am gonna play the lottery and get random roommate. What's the success rate on that? lol
so basically: Larch or Friley?

Re: Housing Advice Please
I played the random roommate game twice in college and it worked out OK once but the 2nd time I am glad I didn't have to live an entire school year with that kid else I probably would have gone off on him a few times.

Re: Housing Advice Please
Friley all the way. Never know what you'll get with the random roommate but I'd still take that over a friend from high school. You can either make a new friend or hate some random **** and not one of your current friends.

Re: Housing Advice Please
FYI: getting out of housing contract costs 80% of the remaining contract.

Friley- bigger room, nicer digs in general, but you're also with all engineers... I would have also said UDCC, but i hear MWL got a new dining hall with uncrappy food too now.
I personally lived in Friley, loved it, had a random roommate, and while we didn't hang out much (he was a pretty big nerd and was at solar car lab 24/7), we got along and still chat occasionally. I'd highly suggest the random roommate, it forces you to get out and meet new people more than if you are there with a HS buddy.

Friley. Without a doubt. I lived in both.

Re: Housing Advice Please
Never lived in Friley but I did live in Larch and unless you want to party 24/7 or are on the fourth floor (honors) is is a mess, never really kept up you can expect to wake up to puke and pee in the elevators most weekends (that's when the elevators are working) along with trash thrown all around the halls because people think they are too good to take down the trash.

Re: Housing Advice Please
I'd have to say Friley. It is more interesting than MWL with different types of rooms and not just a big box. I am biased though because my best friends at Iowa State were the girls I met on my dorm floor.
I played the random room mate lottery and won. I lived in a dorm room with the one they randomly assigned me freshman year for 3 years and the 4th year we were in an apartment with 2 other people. 13 years later we are still really good friends and get together every couple of months and have taken lots of trips together including 2 2-week trips to Ireland and Italy.

Re: Housing Advice Please
so...
Larch=party, lots of girls, messy, small rooms, close to stadiums, new cafeteria...
Friley = less party, less girls, bigger rooms, little quieter/comfier, middle of campus...
that about right?

Re: Housing Advice Please
The rooms in Larch aren't small (especially if you are on the top floor with the 10 ft ceilings).
And, do the rooms in Friley have air conditioners? Larch does

that about right? Sounds about right. Also, all rooms in Friley have AC. I lived in Friley for a while and I'd strongly recommend it.
If you're worried about there being fewer girls, don't be. There are plenty of girls around, especially at the UDCC.

All of the negative in Friley can be delt with. Not so much with Larch. You won't be able to control all of the partying and mess that happens, and you can't move it closer to campus (unless you have a lot of classes in Forker or some other nearby building. I didn't catch what your major was, but chances are the majority of your classes will be closer to Friley.)
It's always nice to have a nice/quiet dorm. It's closer to campus. You can still go out to parties or have some buddies over to party. There are plenty of women in the UDA area. You can ride the "red route" cyride to Hilton and closer to JT stadium, and they run every 10 minutes I think.
The pros and cons of Friley outweigh those of Larch, IMO.

Re: Housing Advice Please
I would consider off campus if that's an option for you. My domain was 507 Welch and had 3-5 roomates and the negative is that somebody was always ready to party. When I had to get some work done, I just packed up and went to Parks......

When I had to get some work done, I just packed up and went to Parks...... That place is something I wish I would have found my Freshman and Soph years. I always tried studying in the dorms when I lived there, but there are way too many distractions no matter how quiet the place is. Once I moved off campus, the library was my best friend when I had a test/paper and finals week.
