agreed...it has become too much of a "let's all get **** faced and do whatever" I have no problem with that happening as long as it doesn't become the face of the celebration.

Re: Car Flipped Onto Its Top During VEISHEA

My roommate had his window smashed and car broken into on Thursday night while parked on Douglas Street in downtown Ames. He was apparently one of many that was broken into that night.

I love VEISHEA, but I always dread all the idiots that it brings to town and the excuse it gives some regulars to do stupid things now.

Unfortunately VIESHEA usually means an increase in crime (and I'm talking about non-alcoholic crime like DUI, public intox, and house parties), which is unfortunate, because it doesn't have to be like that. (and i'm not saying DUI isn't a minor thing because it is, but it just seems like **** like the above happens at an extremely high rate during VEISHEA

Of course you also have about 10x the enforcement in town for veishea weekend, so you're going to see an uptick in some stats just because of that as well..

Hey, it was pretty tame in the '70's. Not till those '80's punks started to show up did it get nasty!

Re: Car Flipped Onto Its Top During VEISHEA

Count me in with the old schoolers who believe VEISHEA has evolved into a ridiculous drinking event, thus straying from it original intent to showcase the school to prospective students and the public. I feel bad for the students, staff and faculty that still work hard to put on a great event, but the only news coverage focuses on drunkenness.

Maybe I'm tainted because as a student the weekend was more work than fun. Between setting up the departmental booth, running a shift or more at the booth and booth breakdown, plus bartending at night - it was exhausting, but a great experience. No time for this partying thing.

Or, maybe I'm tainted because when I was a student I had my car parked on a residental street the DAY of the parade (what is now south of the East HyVee) and a parade float sideswiped it and continued on its way. It was being towed by Bud's because it stalled at the start of the parade and was thus kicked out and going back to Howe's on S Duff. The tow truck driver admitted he knew that he hit the car and kept going, and the students on the float said the same thing. It took about three months and copious amounts of time with the University attorney to get 'someone' to pay for the damage. If the float was sponsored by a house in the Greek system I assume they would have paid to save face, but no, I was lucky enough to get sideswiped by a float from a dorm floor that basically didn't care.

    Yeaaa VEISHEA

Hey this is great... Good to see students still act stupid during Veishea. My years in college students did some stupid things, and I'm sure it will always continue, but sometime all this stupidity will lead to the permanent cancellation of Veishea.

Or it was the police van, with that painted on it to confuse students from Iowa who would eventually be riding in it.

Too many dirtsticks out there now... The whole "no drinking" has made VEISHA a giant event. I don't understand why people flip cars over. Ridiculous. VEISHA is on it's last leg if students keep up this crap.

Re: Car Flipped Onto Its Top During VEISHEA

I made the comment to my roommate that I wouldn't want my truck to be anywhere near campustown. Just because I know how many stupid ****s are in town for the weekend. Most of the serious trouble comes from out of towners. Hawk fans, Des Moines/Chicago trash, you name it, they are here just to cause trouble.

The police need to stop worrying about breaking up house parties (yep, I was at a big awesome house party on Hayward with a live band outside that got shut down by the po-po), and worry about patrolling for more serious crimes than some kids having some fun at a house party.

IMO, VEISHEA will be cancelled at some point within the next ten years.

Agree 100%. Cops are way to ticket happy and way to willing to break up house parties. When parties are broken up, people leave. When people leave, stuff happens. I was with two friends that got arrested this weekend for minors just by holding a cup at a house party. Trust me there is much worse stuff going on and a misappropriation of cop resources. I still argue that there is a common goal between ISU and the PD to make the students do something bad enough that they have reason to cancel VEISHEA.

Re: Car Flipped Onto Its Top During VEISHEA

First off, vandalism is probably one of the things I hate the most, it is unacceptable.

However, you live on Hunt street in a drinking college town. In this weekend you should be thinking this could happen. If you admit you stayed up late, you should be able to know this could happen living there. It is stupid, but people are stupid, especially some drunk college kids. I never did anything of this sort, mainly because I have a little respect for peoples ****.

On VEISHEA itself. It is a party. That's all it is anymore, which is just fine. I don't see the problem. When people in Iowa think of it, they think party. It is what it is. It won't change. I know that Veishea week for me consisted of next to no class, no studying, nothing but ******* off and drinking. I had a bunch of friends come to town and we had a blast. Honestly they were the best days of college. I really hope they don't take this away from future students because a couple dumbasses every year have to do something dumb.
    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.
