Not that I feel sites like this should be the be all end all of choosing professors, but here is what Rate My Professors has to say about Cowan.
Arnie Cowan - Iowa State University - RateMyProfessors.com
I never had Arnie, but I have a friend that did her honors project with him about 10 years ago. He's kind of a dork, but she didn't have any problems with him.
I had Arnie back in 2001 for International Finance, he knows his stuff, however he is boring and monotone and I could not stay awake. Thus. I dropped his class and lost Finance as my second major, lol.
The bolded is true, I had him a few years ago for International Finance. One story, I don't know how we got on to the subject, but he was talking about how if you had a problem with him or the way he taught his class he actually said in front of the class "I don't care because I'm tenured."
I also had Cowan for the International Finance course and agree 100 pct with what was said above. He's not very exciting to listen to, very monotone, and comes off as somewhat odd. There is no question whatsoever that he is extremely knowledgeable in the courses he instructs, I just personally found his teaching style difficult to absorb much in lectures. His tests were fairly difficult as well with some essay questions as well as multiple choice and true/false.
It was just kind of a jerk thing to say in my opinion. Just go to class, you probably don't really even need to read the book. His test questions come from class. There was really nothing wrong with the class and I never really talked to him so I never had a big problem with him. I'm neutral, with a lean towards dislike.
I sign up for professors based on looks. :jimlad:
I had Borisova and she was a great teacher. She has a great sense of humor and really appreciates when students get involved with the class. She seemed to like some sarcasm in the classroom. Very helpful and approachable.
When I took Art History 281, there was a redhead TA that was GORGEOUS.
