Probably not directly during the interview, but I know in my workplace (and previous workplaces) that the first thing the HR sees when screening the resumes is the GPA. If you're under certain threshold (I believe now it's 3.0, then you'll be out of contention for interview). If you're close, they'd look at your resume carefully to see what can offset your "weak" GPA.
I agree about having fun though plus keep the grades high enough. Most of my professors were really good in spreading the weight that you need to work hard throughout the semester (and hopefully learn and understand everything) instead of putting the finals as the sole measure.

Re: is iowa state fun?
Grades are important if you're paying for school. Even if it's only a $1,000 scholarship, that's still $1,000 you don't have to pay for.

Take your tests and quizzes and make sure that if by chance you bomb a final you don't fail, if you can do that, party all you want and you will be fine.
and work at a restaurant or bar, because the barter system goes A LONG WAY in a college town.
I traded more than one drink to get my name on a paper.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. -

The best college advice I ever got was to look at college like it is a full time job - because as a student it is your job. If you're not putting in at least 40 hours of work a week (class and studying) then you're gonna get fired. Work overtime when you need to (finals). Also, get in the habit of waking up at 7 and being at "work" (either class or studying) by 8am - no matter when you went to bed the night before because you can sleep when you're dead.
Going Greek is also recommended. There's always something going on, or multiple people to party with.
Also, get as many scholarships as possible, or even a part-time job because paying student loans blows.

Greek community? Good for some, others need to stay away.
Scholarships are a definite sweet thing though. Not paying tuition is really, really nice. Having a part time job to cover everything else ain't too bad either. Still have plenty of time to chill. 40 hours of school crap is ridiculous.
