The youtube vid already has 250k views, and just in one page of comments I read things like "I know where I want to go to school". Especially when out of state students may not exactly have the best opinion of how "cool" Iowa is.
People who think Lady Gaga is so bad now are the same types who thought Elvis and the Beatles were the devil. Lady Gaga doesn't do or sing about any activities that a US Senator is outed for doing on a weekly basis. Unlike the self-hating political and religious leaders we have, I respect her because at least she's honest about who she is.

I didn't say she was fired, on the radio they said he/she was fired, I was just stating what they said! But it was nice to hear them say "iowa state university" on xm a few times on my drive!

1. They don't like Lady Gaga but they could care less if the campanile played her music one day.
2. They think it's cool and are more likely to come to Iowa State.
It's really a clever little marketing device when you think about it from a non 70-year-old-fundamentalist viewpoint. Kind of like "I'm so proud" Lite... or maybe like a wine cooler malternative I'm so proud.

Second, as far as the campanile and ISU go, IMO any publicity is good publicity. There are people who live in Ames that don't know that the campanile exists, much less in Des Moines, or Omaha, or L.A. It's a bad thing that a view of our campus and our most recognizable campus feature went viral?? Sorry, but that's a GOOD thing. I LIKE that ISU is on the front edge of social media and not the back end. And I don't see that the playlist of the campanile needs to be restricted to classical music. Dr. Tam almost always plays popular music on Fridays, and has done so for years. I've heard Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, N*Sync, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, ZZ Topp, and more Michael Jackson than anyone could ask for. Gaga just happens to be on popularity's cutting-edge right now. Major props go to her musical ability, too... you don't see many pop artists today being talented musicians as well. Most people don't know this, but Lady Gaga has double degrees in Vocal Performance and Piano Performance. From Juilliard. She also composes 100% of her music, and writes all the lyrics. Whether you like her music or not is a matter of opinion, but this is a fact: she is a stunningly talented, classically-trained musician who knows exactly what she's doing.
True and Valiant
I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: Lady Gaga/Campanile
Fridays are "request days". You can submit requests to her, but she may not ever get around to playing them.
Halloween is my favorite. She plays stuff like Addams Family and Phantom of the Opera.
Green hills for thy throne, and for crown a golden melody/Ringing in the hearts of all who bring thee love and loyalty/Dear Alma Mater, make our spirits great True and valiant like the bells of I-O-WA STATE!
And thank you Stumpy for this: -

You learn something new every day! Like I said, she definitely has some talent, and IMO her songwriting is just as good if not better than her musicianship. Some of those songs are so damn catchy that you can't get them out of your head. At least she can sing and play instruments...more than I can say for some of the other pop artists out there like Miley Cyrus and Brittney Spears. I can't say I'm a huge fan of pop music, but I like to believe that I can recognize talent when I hear it.
As far as the campanile thing, IMO it's nothing but good press for ISU. I'm betting Geoffrey is far from upset with Dr. Tam...more like the opposite.

Also, one of kanes sidekicks is from cedar rapids area and I ran into him in dc working out there! Anybody know who I'm talking about? If you are talking about "The Kane Show"; then the sidekick you are talking about is Samy.
I listen to their show at work, its based out of DC, but played at many stations across the US. They mentioned the lady gaga being played on the campanile during their morning radio show.

This is a sacrilege!
How dare they defile our sacred icon by using its venerable pipes to pump out that puerile hedonistic noise.

I'm not the biggest Gaga fan, some of her songs are enjoyable, but let the students have a good laugh at hearing that come from the campanile. I'm sorry but if they've played Ricky Martin or ZZ Top, they sure as hell can play Lady Gaga.

Re: Lady Gaga/Campanile
There are over 900 comments under the video. A vast majority are saying how cool that was and there are probably 20 saying either they want to go to ISU or they wish they would have. Any college would kill for that kind of publicity. Similar to the CPR speech, you can't force something to go viral, it just happens. Excellent job by ISU getting this out there. In today's world, you can't afford to sit in a cave and hope that people find out about you. You have to get your product in front of "customers". An ad campaign with this kind of reach and effect would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
By the way clone51, there are no pipes in the campanile.

The ledge?
Folks that embrace the siren song of relativism are the ones leading us to the ledge and a fall into the deep abyss of nihilism.

Yeah, kids today and their far out carrillon music and moon-pie consumption. Next thing you know they'll be playing the devil's music on their penny-whistles and rolling their knickerbockers up to the knee.
While they are at it, they should ban the other sacriligious anthem that is occasionally played there: the Bells of Iowa State.
After all: Green Hills for thy throne,
And for crown a golden melody,
Ringing in the hearts of all
Who bring thee love and loyalty.
Sounds an awful lot like Ba'al worship to me!

Re: Lady Gaga/Campanile
Yes, I will take James C. Wilson's inspiring lyrics over Gaga's cynical soulless song.
"I want your ugly
I want your disease
I want your everything
As long as it’s free
I want your horror
I want your design
‘Cuz you’re a criminal
As long as you’re mine
I want your psycho
Your vertigo shtick
Want you in my rear window
Baby you’re sick
You know that I want you (’Cuz I’m a free ***** baby)"
My gosh that stuff is bad.
