I think it may just be the font. After reviewing them again, I really do think it is the font.

Does anyone know if there is an "Official ISU Font"?

I also wanted something simple so people watching on TV knew who we were. Instead of "what's the deal with the bird in the blender?" And maybe the announcers would be less likely to call us the Iowa State Hawkeyes.
RIGHT ON CYDOLE!!! Nail on the head, babeee. Those uni's look awesome! Simple & classic to stand the test of time.

That comes with winning games, not making our logo recognizable. I think our logo is fine -- it's unique and describes our mascot well. Win some games, and more people will recognize it.

Deep within the heart of Iowa, a storm is brewing...
... the winds of change ripple throughout the vast fields of corn surrounding the small college town of Ames.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success.

This is Cyclone Football.

There is. It's a custom font created for and trademarked by Iowa State. I'm sure you can get information about it from the Trademarks Office.

How about winning instead of changing the uniform?

They are official University fonts. As the athletic department is a unit of the university, those are official fonts used by the athletic offices (though the athletic offices are not the ONLY department to use them). I don't believe that the athletic department has its own official standard fonts. There are the graphics that include letters and words, of course, but those don't qualify as fonts.

Good job Cydole, it wasn't until someone else commented on the helmet that I went back for another look, blew it up to 150% and said wow, he may be on to something here. Close to USC but not as cluttered as their look. I would not have considered changing the design of the helmet until I saw yours and now think it could be as recognizable as the "N" for Nebraska or the "OU" for Oklahoma.

I agree we should have put a red stripe on the side of the pants. Unfortunately, it looks as though we won't be number 8 on the 'Worst Uniforms' list anymore, but more like 4 or 5.

Another look to reference for inspiration is that of the Redskins in the 60's.
