One poster mentions 4 run-ins with the law, what were they? I'm aware of the cough medicine and fire extinguisher problems while he was at
ISU and the reported DWI before he enrolled at
ISU.
I don't like Mikes behavior. His arrest for theft just after the fire extinguisher deal is a very poor decision. To me it indicates a bigger issue with Mike's character. My suspicion is he has shoplifted many times before, but just hasn't been caught.
That said, the two legal problems he's had since coming to
ISU don't reach a level of kicking a kid off the team. I also think that any legal problems MT had prior to coming to
ISU were known by G-Mac, so G-Mac knew he wasn't getting a saint and might have to deal with some disciplinary issues with Mike.
I understand some peoples attitude that playing in college sports is a priviledge and not right- so athletes should show their appreciation and stay out of trouble. The only problem is that is not reality in our society. Top athletes are coddled by our society from a young age. Parents invest their lives in their childrens athletic careers, they are revered by their high school classmates, they are put on a pedestal by their community and many coaches treat their star palyers differently.
I also feel that universities make millions of dollars off the efforts of 18-22 year old young people, so universities have a responsible to work through some of the disciplinary problems that arise. Mike's 2 problems haven't reached the level where he should be discarded by
ISU. But in all cases if a 3rd offense occurs within a kids college career he should be booted off the team or dismissed from the team but remain on scholarship to attend class.
In the past I seem to remember guys like Vroman & Homan having similar multiple offenses and don't seem to remember much of a call to have Homan booted.
