Fontenot question for Cubs fans
Fontenot was my favorite Iowa Cub before getting called up, and I noticed he's doing really well lately and he's hitting for a great average right now. I expect him to cool off but I always thought he'd be a good major leaguer because he just hits so hard. I see he's starting at short, does he have a future there? Who was playing there before he got called up? Is it an injury thing, will he be sent back down one somebody comes back of the DL or something?
Thanks!

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
I believe he was called up when Rameriez went on the 15 day DL. Not sure what the long term plan was for when Aramis got back, but there's just no way they can take him out of the line up - he's playing solid in the field and beating the crap out of the ball. Hitting something like .390 and clutch.
I think last night was his first stint at short. Lou is trying to keep all his infielders active, and they're all playing pretty well. But something is going to have to give. D Lee and A Rameriez are everyday players and that leaves Theriot, Fontinot, DeRosa and Izturis to play the other two spots. And since none of them are "big bats", you have to figure somebody is getting sent down or traded.

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
he doesnt have a future at SS in my opinion on any other team but the Cubs. SS has been a tough spot for the cubs Cedeno can play D, but cant hit, Izturis cant do anything.
As long as Derosa is comfortable at 2nd Fontenot will be the SS. Like all major league guys Font will cool off. But right now he has been a MAJOR reason why the cubs are playing so well.
Their lineup is better with Font in it, they have 3-4 guys that can hit lead-off on any team = great eye at every at bat. Soriano, Pie, Font..Makes the pitchers pitch and gets them on base for Ramirez & Lee.
Great times right now, lets just hope they keep it going. Big series this weekend with the brew crew but i like that we have 6 games remaining with them all at wrigley.

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
Gotta love the Cubbies with all of their ex-LSU middle infielders...Theriot and Fontenot!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
I think Fontenot is up to stay for awhile being you can't send a guy down that his hitting around .400 with a 9 game hit streak. He might play some SS but I think if they can trade Jones here soon DeRosa might go to RF some and Theriot at SS with Fontenot at 2B.
Izturis might be the next player to be traded after Jones as he is a FA at the end of the season so might not be too hard to trade him. But I think Lou is finding that these kids can play. I still think Murton and Cedeno have a future if they use them right. Cedeno has been hitting .385 in 39 games with 4 homers and 17 RBI since being sent down and Murton has only been down for 10 games but I expect he'll get his average back up to around .300 while down here too.
Pie concerns me some, while he's been great defensively in CF his BA has not been good and he still swings at bad pitches. He hit .389 in 31 games in Iowa this year so not sure why he's struggling so much at the plate unless he's pressing because he's scared of being sent back down.
And I see Kerry Wood is going to throw off a mound today. Hopefully he can stay healthy this time because we really need his arm in the bullpen right now.

Well he is already 2-3 with a home run as the Cubbies lead 5-0 in the 4th inning...I love this time of year!!!

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
388 average not bad for a I Cub and only 5'-8" tall

Pinella was talking about him staying at 2nd and letting DeRosa wander around for positions open

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
the rumor i have been hearing is fontenot has a future at second and theriot at short. so pretty much that leaves cedano and iztures up for trading if the cubs are wanting to do that

Looks like the Cubs middle infield is in good hands for the next few years.

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
This is from the game story on cubs.com. He sure is getting it done in the little time he has been up in the Bigs.
Fontenot hit a towering 415-foot solo home run in the fourth. He was 3-for-4 on the day, also hitting a double and scoring two runs. Fontenot is batting .450 (18-for-40) during his current career-high 10-game hitting streak, has hit safely in 17 of 18 games since being called up from Triple-A Iowa on June 9, and had his teammates talking after the game.

Re: Fontenot question for Cubs fans
I know Ryan and his parents...they are great people. He loves playing for Lou.
At LSU, Theriot played SS and Fontenot played 2B. I would assume those to be their primary positions going forward.
Fontenot has always had a lot of "pop" in his bat while Theriot brings a lot of winning intangibles to the table.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
