Re: Spencer Tillman predicts that ISU...

The only reason I remember that is because there are many on this board that are now eagerly anticipating the big rivalry (and I am talking Army Navy stuff here) game between Central Florida with JS, and that juggernaut South Florida team with Dan the man.

I think that the sports bars in Ames and Des Moines are going to be SRO for that one.

Is it really a big rivalry? I thought South Florida's big rival was Florida International. Or was that Miami's rival? I can't keep them all straight.

Whatever, I'll watch that game if it's on TV.

Unlike in Old School, you won't be the only one streaking - I'd be with ya if we pulled a 9 win season out in '07.

5 or 6 wins would be ok. 7 would be awesome. 8+?

Amazing...

I think we'll be in that 4-6 range. Prove me wrong coach, I beg you.

Re: Spencer Tillman predicts that ISU...

Sounds like these people in Iowa City who aren't "impressed" with the Chizik hire are probably the same people who were saying we could never get another coach as good as McCarney if we let him go. I was always concerned about how glowingly all of our opponents would talk about McCarney. Frankly, I like the fact that our opponents are trying to downplay our hire...it means they are somewhat concerned or scared.
Amen! Couldn't have said it better myself. Truth is, if something scares you or worries you, most people try to brush it off as something they don't need to concern themselves with. Just makes them feel better. Rest assured that if it were a bad hire, they wouldn't hesitate to tell us about it. The fact that they are not, speaks volumes in my opinion.

Curious if there has been much talk about the in-state recruits who have verbelled to ISU. One of their fears was losing out on recruits that used to favor UI. Appears some of their fears may be coming true.

As much as I appreciate some of the good defenses Skaldaney gave us over the last several years, there was no need to be lining the corners 10 yards off the receivers. That was a disaster and a lesson not learned as the season went on.

It's ironic, though, that Skladeny was the first to get a job. And it was a coordinators job at a good school.

Texas A&M did this exact thing the year we beat them because of their inexperience in the secondary. It's a frustrating thing to watch as fans, but overall it's neccessary when you have a multitude of new players in the secondary, front seven, etc. Skladany was the anti-Cotton, and I appreciated seeing the strong defenses he cooked up in 2004 and 05.

Deep within the heart of Iowa, a storm is brewing...
... the winds of change ripple throughout the vast fields of corn surrounding the small college town of Ames.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success.

This is Cyclone Football.

I think a lot of our defensive improvement had to do with increased talent more than anything that was accomplished teaching or scheme-wise. If you look at Dobbins, Hobbs, Hayward, Carstens, Reed, all on NFL two-deeps, among other fringe players, you could make an argument that our defenses underachieved. Much like Barney's offensive, there was never much adaptation at half time or adjustment to the other team's changes. We lined up and beat teams mano-y-mano. If that didn't work, we were done. I don't think we ever really confused other offenses by throwing something new or different at them. Hopefully the Chizik era will improve on that.

Interesting comment...as an LSU season ticket holder I saw the last season of Gerry Dinardo and then the Saban era...Saban did four key things that Dinardo couldn't do:

-Make coaching adjustments during the game
-Get the players to focus on each and every play
-Implement an aggressive attacking / blitzing defense
-Recruit top notch athletes with good morals

Good coaches will be able to make adjustments on the fly...Chizik has done this at both Auburn and Texas.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I have to be honest, I don't know if the term "adjustment" was in any dictionary that was in any of the schools that all of the coaches (except Loney) attended. I can't believe that it was, because there is no way that this group of people could look that clueless in the second halves of all of these games, if they had been exposed to the definition of adjustment.

See, it was the public school system that stopped us from being successful. Damn you liberals, damn you to hell.

Re: Spencer Tillman predicts that ISU...

I hear so much ragging about the old coaching, get over it people, you would think by the sounds of our fans that we were the Michigan Wolverines...I know our Cyclones can be the class of the big 12 in the future, but when u have fans that are always on the coach's backs u r never gonna land the people who will take you places. I am not gonna say anything negative about Chizik and/or his staff while they are at ISU and doing their best running a clean program. I am not gonna call for his head the moment he makes a gutsy move that coulda worked and people woulda loved him for it, but it failed. I want a coach who will takes chances and I think we all need to leave the past coaches alone now, they did their best and what they thought would win games.

As fas as Tillman predicting winning 8 games, I don't believe so with our schedule, but I hope and pray that Tillman has me eating my own foot come bowl season.

GO CYCLONES!!!

I'm sick & tired of predictions... they are so meaningless. I just hope no matter what we do this season, (win or lose) our team can hold their heads high knowing they gave every game their best shot & walk off the field as champions.

Their best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and **** the Prom Queen.

Don't get me wrong. I agree with you. It was just there and I HAD to say it.

Well, then let's hope we see a coaching staff that makes gutsy moves instead of continually letting leads slip away.
