Spencer Tillman predicts that ISU...

"will win 8, possible 9 games" this year under Chizik. He also said he believed that Chizik was the best coaching hire of any of the 25 or 30 new DI coaches hired this past year. Spencer went to OU, lives in Houston, and knows the Big 12 pretty well.

This was on the Tim Brando radio show on Sporting News Radio. Do you have this show on the air in Iowa?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Spencer Tillman is nuts if he thinks we will win 8 games. However, please make me eat crow 6 months from now.

Glad to see I'm not the only one optimistic about the upcoming season. I really think we will surprise some folks.

Crow's not so bad with horseradish mustard and a little bit of Lawry's. I know, I've eaten it many times.
Count me among the many that would love to eat it come the first week of December when we are in the Big 12 championship game.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

I think having a person that can actually coach an offensive line is worth 3 or 4 more wins right there. Not since Loney have we had a O-line that could actually block someone. I predict there will be a marked improvement in O-line play right from the start.

:) Get your ISU license plates, just $50 at: http://www.iamvd.com/ovs/plates/index.htm

I think Gene was the best hire besides Bama getting Saban, but 8 games is just crazy talk considering our schedule. I think we will win 8 games in either 08 or 09, but not this fall.

WOW! We get some great national "publicity" and many in our own fan base see "the cup as half empty". Disappointing.

I know many of you pessimists will tell me about having "rational expectations"...however, I am coming to believe that the talk about being "realistic" is nothing more than an excuse to be satisfied with mediocre results.

I, for one, would rather expect 9 wins and get "disappointed" with 7 or 8 than expect 4 wins and be "happy" with 5 or 6.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I would tend to agree with that philosophy but 2 things stick out in my mind. 2004 Missouri game and 2005 Kansas game. Until I actually see results I not getting my hopes up. To much heartbreak.

Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?

It's because we have had to sit through crappy football after crappy football game for the last 30 years. Why would be expect anything but more crappy football?

My pledge is this, if I see a better team in Nov than I do in Aug, I am upping my NCC membership to Gold. Hopefully others will do the same.

Re: Spencer Tillman predicts that ISU...

People have just learned that if you have lower expectations you are less likely to get hurt. I'm not saying that is the way to go, but it does make us feel better no matter what happens. If the season produces 8 wins and you had expectations of 9 then you are disappointed even though it was a good season. If someone else has the expectations of 4 or 5 wins, then they are off the wall excited with 8 wins. Same season...they're overjoyed, you're disappointed...however same result. It's just a coping mechanism to help with the possible pain a season may bring. When it comes down to it, we are all there together cheering on our Cyclones. Everyone wants to see an 8 or more win season, but not everyone wants to take the chance of being disappointed.

While its great to have faith in your team, with a new coaching staff there are so many unknown factors. I would personally rather have the average Cyclone fan (All fans on CF are well above average and would stick with the team no matter what) come in with low expectations on the year, especially those new purchasers of season tickets, this way they are not disappointed causing them to not purchase tickets next year.

Whether you have high or low expectations it does not make you more or less of a fan...as long as your there cheering on the Cardinal and Gold.

Thanks for the info, it is great to know that others outside ISU have a good feeling about Coach Chizik and the possibilities with ISU!

Hiring Chizik is a better hire than Saban. Chizik will be here long after Saban gets the boot from Alabama.

Saban will have Bama back to BCS games and in the national title hunt within 3 years. Now, as you say from a longterm standpoint Gene might be the better hire given what we need. However, I'm not so sure Saban will leave Alabama anytime because really, where does he go? Clearly, he's done in the NFL and if you are in the college ranks, not many places beat Alabama and the SEC. I could see him being there for many years.

IMO they are the best two hires of the offseason without question.
