John Frickie's thoughts on ISU football...

I had the chance to call Frickie on Fox Sports Radio late Saturday night and talked about the 'Clones. I mentioned that I thought Chizik was a good hire (which he agreed) and thought ISU might make some noise this season. I asked if he thought they could get to .500 (which he doubted). He said the defense is still too weak (esp. with only 4 starters returning) and that the team is a couple of years away from winning football. He mentioned Meyer and Blythe being 2 quality players on the offense and that ISU should be a little concerned if Chizik does experience success within a few years because he might jump ship. The guy knows college football and it was interesting to hear his take...

I listen to Fox sports radio most everynight and didn't get the chance tonight. :( I've never heard any Iowa State chat on, it would have been a treat. I can't say I disagree with his opinions.

I agree with everything he said, actually (from what you're saying). If we win 8+ games next year, he'll probably only stick around for 3 years TOPS, especially if we'd win a Big 12 title in that time. That is, of course, that we're still at a point where we can't pay him what the "big boys" of College Football could. However, if we had the funds to pay him basically whatever any other team offered, he'd probably stay here since it's the midwest, and we have similar values to what seems to be he has. (Guidance for atheletes, family environmet, calm towns, respect for others, etc.)

I'd love to see Chizik around for a long time as long as he can get the job done, but if it goes too fast, and the funds aren't available to keep him, I can almost guarantee he'll jump ship unless his kids are in middle or high school. (Like Ferentz)

The guy has not even coached a game yet and we are worried he is leaving? That would be a great problem to have, but I am not sure we have crossed that bridge yet.

It will take a while to build this program to the point we can even consider talking about big 12 title possibilities. I don't think many KSU type turnarounds occur anymore.

I forgot to mention that Frickie said that Chizik being a defensive coach could help our D some this season...

I really hope we get to a point where we are worried Chizik might leave. That means we are doing well. If JP is still around, we'll either pay Chizik what he deserves or we'll find the next Chizik that is out there.

I think it is offically called "new ISU coach" syndrome. I remember the same talk when Morgan came in. We had the same conversations when McCarney started the high ranking season with Seneca. Let's let Chiz coach a few games before we talk about him leaving.

I hope Chizik quickly puts us in a position whe he has other offers. The sooner the better but lets start by winning the first one.

No kidding! I would love for us to have the kind of three year success that means Chizik goes on to better things. That would be 3 full football seasons of unbelievable football to watch and putting us on the map where the next coach would know what kind of expectations were in place and what ISU is capable of. Let's get to that point before we start trying to figure out how to keep Chizik or hire the next guy.

When does practice officially get underway?

All I know is that we will beat Iowa this year and might lose to Toledo and the MAIN GRECO.

From My Perspective: I have been looking for the 1st conference championship in my lifetime now for about 50 years er maybe its 45 yrs, whats 5 years among friends.

Anyway if Gene Chizik wins me my first conference championship and then wants to leave town, for greener pastures I assume. I will NOT COMPLAIN at all.

Was talking to a friend about this on the way to the Cap League games last night and he thinks Chizik will stay and try to build ISU up like Snyder did at KSU or Schiano at Rutgers. I don't see him as a money-grubber and Ames is a place he could be comfortable raising a family. I guess the one thing that could draw him away might be the challenge of working with one of the top-tier programs - ala Texas, Florida, etc.
