Yesterday they were giving a prize away if you could name the 3 MLB teams that were the least popular in the US. People got Toronto and Washington then basically M&M were trying to get the contest over by saying "did you say Kansas City caller?" and I bet 5 callers didn't pick up on the fact they were giving them the answer!

Yeah I lost faith at the end. But the original point was that Gene Smith should have fired Mac? That is just silly talk, during BVDV's first year was the time when everyone was worried Mac would go to wisconsin. Wow, that seems like so long ago....
I do however agree that his time had ended, and ISU needed to make a change.

I do however agree that his time had ended, and ISU needed to make a change. Hell no Gene wasn't going to fire him. First, regardless of 6-27, he needed Dan to succeed to get him the hell out of here. Then Dan did the one thing that will always endear him to Cyclone fans, he beat the Hawks. I sat in a bar in San Antonio and watched the game, I don't think that I have ever been drunker in my life, pure unadulterated joy. That cinched it, he was here for better or worse. In retrospect, I think that was Hayden Fry's last one finger salute to Iowa State. He got bad enough to let Dan beat him, and keep his job in 98. Setting us all up for the heart wrenching losses to come.
I think that it is in the DNA of every Cyclone fan, we just feel the need to suffer. I mean you can run off a list of games that were just killers, everybody knows them. And people were on here fighting to keep Dan employed. It's like, come on I haven't suffered enough, lets give him another year or two, and see how many more times we can get right up to the brink of a breakthrough, only to let the other team come back and win, with a third string freshman qb at that.
My other favorite was that we hadn't given him enough time to turn the program around. He was here 12 years, people become internationally famous neurosurgeons in less time than that.
I know Brian, but we had hope, or we all were in serious denial. Repressing things that will come out in therapy 20 years from now (I wonder if I can send Dan my bills).

I do however agree that his time had ended, and ISU needed to make a change. I also remember during the fireronzook.com era, on that site, many of the fans wanted Florida to hire Dan McCarney, especially after the 2000 campaign (and this was after some of Cyclone nation had given up on him after the 1999 season when the theme was "close but no cigar". The general attitude was "If he can do what he did with the little resources he had at Iowa State, imagine what he could do here." At the time I can remember Cyclone nation fearing he'd take Florida up on the offer and Cyclone nation blowing a sigh of relief that he stayed.
Of course, then, over the next six years he didn't do much else...
