Ames, Ia. — James Smith walked around Iowa State’s media day Saturday with a small cast on his right hand.
“Just a little fracture,” said the redshirt freshman from Council Bluffs who is listed as a starting safety on the team’s depth chart. “I get the cast off in three weeks, but even if the cast was on, I’d still be able to play.”
The injury has not prevented Smith from participating in workouts.
“I’ll be ready to go,” he said of the Cyclones’ season-opening game against Toledo at 7 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Jack Trice Stadium. “Nothing will keep me out of that game.”
The Des Moines Register published a story Saturday about Smith, who ended up living with a famiily in Council Bluffs after originally growing up in Haiti.
