I was getting back in to my car and heard the tail end of a sports update on KXNO, and I thought I heard Cotlar say that Larry Eustachy will be coaching one of the teams at the Barry Stevens benefit game this Saturday. Has anybody else heard this? It'll be great if it's true. I've missed Larry!

If true, I will cancel my previous plans just to attend.

I for one do not miss LE one bit. The moment I heard he was partying with college kids from an opposing school and shooting his mouth off about how much his team sucked, I lost every ounce of respect I ever had for him. Not really sure how he fits into all of this. The weekend is to honor Barry and relive memories of Cyclone greats of the past. Granted the guy had 2 pretty good years but really embarrassed the school and got himself fired.
On an unrelated note, has anyone heard if the players will be available for autographs?

I have not read or heard of his attendance. From my perspective it would not seem to be appropriate for the event.
What I really don't understand is why any of you would go to see Eustachy but would not go if he is not in attendance? The line-up of players (former ISU and state of Michigan players) along with Orr and McDermott should be plenty of impetus...not to mention the very worthwhile cause!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

That for one puts him in the all time great category. He had a disease called alcoholism...it caused him to make bad decisions...he has it controlled now.

And we can thank Orr, Stevens, Grayer, Hornacek et al for getting ISU basketball off of life support so that we actually had some nets to cut down in the late 90s.
I've always admired people who transmit something to their successors better than it was transmitted to them. That can clearly be said of Coach Orr and his teams in the mid 80s...I'm not so certain that can be said of Eustachy.

For me I don't really know that many players on the line ups. But to see Larry back in Hilton would mean more to me because of when I went to ISU.
It doesn't really matter for me either way being 1000 miles away, but I can definitely see how people would get excited to see LE back in Hilton.

Ahh..., the Larry wars. This should be an interesting thread.
I was very annoyed with how the incompetent boob of a bruce mishandled the fiasco.
I would very much like to see fences mended and LE brought back for something like this.
I doubt very much that it would happen, because the guy calling the shots back then, Prez. Geoffrey, still calls them today.

A handful of the coaches in our MBB past did good things here. These same "this guy was better than this guy" debates get tiresome. I try not to get hung up on ranking them - instead enjoying the memories.
It will certainly be odd to see Larry back at Hilton if he in fact will be there. Even more eerie to see him coaching - if true.
I don't hate him, I just dislike what his addiction did to our basketball program. Often times things have a way of working out in the end. Methinks that starts with Greg McDermott.

Alcolholism is not a disease, it can be controlled with willpower. It is an excuse by the weak to justify their actions.

Will power alone cannot control 'alcoholism'. There is a huge difference in being an alcoholic and 'liking to drink'. Alcoholism has serious psychological and psysiological consequences that will power can't fix.

Larry messed up but he never violated any NCAA rules and like someone said Bruce made it the PR nightmare that it became. He knew of the photos and incident well in advance before the Rag published them and chose to let the media and public opinion decide Larry's fate. Had he either fired or reprimanded Larry before the story broke it would have saved us a ton of embarassment because there wouldn't have been any doubt to what was going to happen to Larry.
With that being said Larry stood true to his word that he was going to go sober and if you've seen any media on him lately he looks great and much sharper. It's too bad he didn't get a chance to show us what a sober Larry could have done at ISU because the Larry we had was still one heck of a coach and give us possibly 2 of the best seasons ever in ISU basketball history.
I'd have no problem if he were at the event and I think it would be great to begin mending the fences. If Larry ever coached another team in Hilton I think there are still a lot of fans out there that like him that he'd probably hear more cheers than boos.
