Similar story to cycloneworld. Grew up a Hawk. Went to ISU yet planned to still be an Iowa fan. Converted almost immediately...never looked back.

Growing up in eastern Iowa, I was basically brainwashed into being a Hawkeye. But, my dad grew up around Ames and always rooted for the Cyclones. When I decided to go to Iowa State, I switched allegiances and never looked back. I'm now proudly "influencing" my own sons as to the ways of the "good side." (But my 4-year old will antagonize me once in a while about the Hawks - just to get under my skin )

grew up a huge Iowa fan living within an hour of IC and being brainwashed by my family and the CR Gazette propoganda... but went to ISU b/c of my major. After a year of internal turmoil over who to root for, I turned clone to the bone and said goodbye to the hawks forever in my 2nd yr at ISU (1994)... sounds like quite a few Clones on here grew up Iowa fans... glad to see I'm not alone!

I'm originally from Long Island, New York, and moved to Davenport when I was 5. No one in Long Island really cares about college sports (especially my dad), so I was a fresh slate. I was easily converted to an Iowa fan. This lasted up until I started looking for colleges. I was undecided whether I wanted to be an architect or an engineer (I'm neither now, btw). Iowa didn't offer those courses. Iowa State did. I applied to Iowa State and got my acceptance letter. That didn't quite do it for me - I decided to switch allegiances the day after the ISU-Iowa football game in '97 (I wanted to cheer for the winning side of the football rivalry one last time - little did I know a couple of years later we'd win 5 straight and 6 of 9). What made the switch REALLY easy was the performance of the basketball team that year - the first time I cheered for ISU over Iowa in anything. Never looked back.

Sadly, that really is the best way to describe the Gazette's Iowa and ISU coverage.

Both parents are ISU grads, two uncles, one aunt, so Iowa was never discussed at the dinner table or at family reunions.
Never really followed the hawks until I moved to southeast Iowa during my high school years, but we still drove by Iowa City to go to Ames to watch games.

Since I was born, although I had many family "friends" try to convert me for years, which I think only cemented feelings further, as the calm and highly intelligent Cyclone fans knew that if I was to be one of them, it would be natural. Plus I hate following the crowd and everyone is a hawkeye.

I liked the Cyclone one, and soon after started following their games. I don't remember the hiring of Johnny Orr as coach, but I remember that his first teams were the ones that hooked me for good.

I've been a Clone Fan since I saw Dave Hoppman and Tom Vaughn play against Dennis Claridge and Bob Brown in October 1962 in Lincoln.NE.
I was a high school senior at the time and sat in the south (wooden)bleachers and ticket cost $2.50.

Like many people who have responded to this thread, I grew up a big Hawkeye fan. I lived in Cedar Rapids, and my family had season tickets to Iowa football and basketball. I always casually rooted for Iowa State when they weren't playing Iowa, but I never followed them all that closely. When it came time to go to college, I chose Iowa State because I thought I wanted to be an engineer. (Though that didn't last long... )
I'll admit that I had some mixed emotions my freshman year when Iowa State and Iowa played. After years of being an Iowa fan, it was hard for me to allow another team to supplant the Hawks as my favorite team. But I loved my experience at Iowa State so much, that Iowa State slowly but surely rose to the top. By my sophomore year, there was no question that Iowa State was my favorite team. The Cyclones have been solidly entrenched there ever since.

I tried getting the SID to get me on the bus to travel with the team so I could go watch them play ISU. He wouldn't let me because he knew I was a huge fan of the 'Clones.

I have been a season ticket holder before I was one years old. Interestingly, I have been eating at TacoTime just as long.

My hometown in central Iowa (Baxter) was full of diehard Hawk fans, few to none of whom ever attended UI. We're talking the "bad" Hawk fans here; need I say more? I didn't like ISU so much as I loathed the hometown Hawk fans; my decision was completed upon enrollment at ISU! Parents weekend of my freshman year the Towers sponsored a window painting contest and the winner was sixth floor of Wallace with the message "Eat sh!t & die Hawk b@stards".
