Jeff Johnson seems like a great guy, but I agree. Doesn't really look too good when the only way we can get the whole stadium doing a chant is when we have the alumni association director on the field with a microphone leading them...
I think Gene would have a **** fit if he sees that (In Texas, it's spontaneous, and the whole stadium does it. And their stadium holds almost 2x as many)
No, we aren't Texas - yet
But the crowd shouldn't have to be told to do a chant, they should just pick one up when they hear it

Maybe it would be better if it was just for the big games when everyone is really pumped up and will really participate. It seems kind of lame when we do it against the likes of UNI.

let's get a student out on the field instead of Jeff Johnson... let's get students more involved!

My hope is that while it seems hokey now someday it will work and we won't need someone to lead us. Of course it's going to be hard to do that with some of those complicated cheers...
Anyway, I think it's good they're at least trying to make some more gameday traditions but it might take a while for them to catch on.

Let's just worry about making winning a gameday tradition.

If you have ever gone to a Gator game, first of all do it, then you would notice Mr. Two Bits... This guy wearing a yellow button down shirt and an Orange and Blue tie with a rolled up program in his hand.... 40 years ago he would stand up in the crowd saying "two bits, four bits, six bids, a dollar, all for the gators, stand up and hollar!" To this day he goes out to mid field before the game and does the same basic cheer... He then makes his way around to every part of the stadium to do the cheer...
I guess my point is, it may not seem cool now, but it may catch on and bepretty cool...

The new commercial is awesome! I love it and can't wait to see it on the air. The shots are great...the players look so badass. It just has a really great look. The drumline music at the end is rad.
Can't wait to see what will run on the jumbotron this season!!

Speaking in generalities, I like having Jeff Johnson out on the field. He has an interminable enthusiasm for the game and for the team, and that's what we need out there, until cheer traditions become firmly entrenched. However, I think last year he was given too much free reign and not enough constructive criticism. The man doesn't have the strongest sense of rhythm, nor does he realize just how big of a delay there is between him speaking and the audience hearing it. Both of those things chopped some cheers off at the knees last year. Later in the season, the audience could do it on their own, so they just ignored him and he eventually figured it out and stopped trying to lead and just let people do it for a few seconds. Those are two things that really need to be worked on. As far as the communication/criticism part, he needs to be told that not all of his cheers are good. "Cardinal... Gold" was a particularly awkward one. I think he needs to work with somebody from Marketing and a few students to come up with better cheer ideas.

Give me a choice between those two groups, and I'll take a random sampling of students. At least then it won't be a direct rip-off of a conference school.

And just think... after an hour of yelling we'd have juuuuuuuust enough time to head back to Welch Ave to wet our hoarse throats so that they'll be ready to go again in the morning! | | |
