I haven't seen much live footage of Chizik, mostly just pictures. But the picture in the second article here made me wonder what his personality is like. He seems like a stoic, intense bada**. I know his dad is a Marine, but does anyone know him more personally that can confirm what he is really like?

Looking at that picture makes me think he's gonna rip my face off. I think he's going to be a good one for us!

“My son said, ‘How did they put your face on a coin and you haven’t won any games yet?’ ” Chizik said. “He’s 6, by the way.”

That's a good one.

I don't know him personally, but I had a chance to meet him at a golf outing earlier in the summer. He came up to our hole as we were teeing off. Obviously, at those sort of things he has to be a politician. You know, shaking hands and making small talk. But he made sure to say hi to everyone in the group, looked everyone in the eye and asked their name and shook their hand. He joked around a bit, but for the most part he was serious and to the point. He said over and over again how appreciative he was for the support he and the football team has been getting since he got to Ames.

I met him very briefly at the Cyclone Tailgate Tour so my knowledge is limited. He's a very personable guy that seems very genuine BUT it appears that you get him close to a football and he starts to growl.

Sounds like a good coach to me!

Also from the Star:

Bowen buffing up
Iowa State linebacker Alvin Bowen, a preseason All-Big 12 selection by the media, said he plans to play at “a heavy 225” pounds instead of the 210 he played at last season. The reason behind his weight gain is purely savage.
“Sometimes, I hit someone and they don’t just immediately go back,” Bowen said. “I want that effect all the time. Every time. No mercy whatsoever.”
Bowen topped Division I-A in tackles in 2006 at 12.92 per game. Asked about the art of making a tackle, Bowen revealed that there is nothing out of the ordinary he does to make a stop.
“I just feel like if I’m out there, I might as well make a play,” said Bowen, who recorded a career-high 20 tackles against Toledo last season.

I'm glad Bowen has bulked up and is ready to make a lot of plays again. Because, once again, he's going to need to this fall.

A unit we haven't heard from at all this off-season is the secondary. What's James Smith up to with bulking up, etc. Drenard Williams? Devon McDowell, how's he doing with meeting the expectations to remain on the team? Supposed phenom Steve Johnson going to contribute this fall?

CN has a nice free interview with Bowen. He talks quite a bit about the secondary. No mention of Johnson. He singles out Singleton, I believe.

Scout.com: Alvin Bowen Transcript

'tiny little text etched into her neck it said "jesus lived and died for all your sins." she's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back. it said: "damn right i'll rise again." yeah, damn right you'll rise again.'

Chizik is a great in person, he is a classy guy, treats everyone with respect. But he knows when he needs to get after it. He has that intensity inside

Looking at the Bowen conversation I saw no mention of Carper. How is his summer going, is his knee ready for practice. I recall in class in the spring he still had a limp but I don't know if it was gone by may.
