Van Coleman on Pomlee

Since we've whiffed on so many big guys for 2008, I honestly hope we offer and get Pomlee. We still have two schollies to fill and we get thin on experience up front. Iverson and Davila are far from locks as well.

The 17-Under AAU Junior Nationals completed their fourth round of tournament play Monday and ended with the quarterfinal match-ups set for Tuesday. There were some upsets, and the night ended with a couple of nail-biters in a fitting end to a great day of basketball as the 17-Under AAU's Junior Boys National Championships moved into quarterfinal action.

The Alabama Challenge nipped Martin Brothers Select 76-73 in overtime in the best match-up of the day. It was a close game throughout and featured rallies by both clubs in regulation to get it to overtime. This should have been a semi-final, but do to pre-seeding it ended up in the sweet sixteen.

The Challenge was led by 6-foot-8 JaMychal Green with 23 points, and he earned them all, while the sweet shooting perimeter duo of 6-foot-5 Nick Williams and 6-foot-2 Andrew Steele chipped in with 14 points each in the win. Williams hit a huge three to send it to overtime. Martin Brothers Select was led by 6-foot-8 L.A. Pomlee, who had an impressive game and finished with 22 points, plus unofficial totals of 12 boards and six blocks. He received solid support from 6-foot-5 Gonzaga commit Grant Gibbs with 21 points and 6-foot-4 Iowa commit Matt Gatens, who added 16 points in the heartbreaking loss.

L.A. Pomlee, the 6-foot-8 power forward from Martin Brothers Select, has really blown-up in Orlando now that he's healthy and back in shape. Schools like Indiana, Kentucky, Providence, Alabama, and Ohio State have joined Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota, Miami (FL), and Bradley as teams with serious interest in the physical rebounder and shot blocker.

Blood clot thing is still scary. I would not mind to get him though.

Ive seen him play several times and the kid is very athletic. A good get in my opinion. Completely dominated for Dport Central.

What is interesting about GMac's recruiting is that he seems to be ahead of the 'big' Bball schools in finding/recognizing talent. And it should payoff.

As a grad of D-port North I resent the implication that anything good comes from D-port Central, much like anything good comes from EIU...

As a grad of North Scott, I wish Pomlee would've been a few years older so he could have played against us when we were good at something

You are still good at something - education. Both my wife and I were North grads, which was a good school when we graduated (8 and 10 years ago, respectively). There's no way in hell we're sending our kids, when we have them, to North, or any Davenport school, for that matter. Each of the three schools have become Thug High, and Assumption is a Catholic school with Catholic school problems (no offense to those that attended decent Catholic schools, but it's no secret around here that Assumption has kids with far too much money, kids with no respect for authority, and a designer drug/drug in general problem). We plan on moving into the North Scott district (likely Eldridge) so our kids can go there.

You are still good at something - education. Both my wife and I were North grads, which was a good school when we graduated (8 and 10 years ago, respectively). There's no way in hell we're sending our kids, when we have them, to North, or any Davenport school, for that matter. No offense but you can't run from Drugs anymore. The are everywhere.

Drugs are prevalent to a certain extent everywhere... but some places are worse than others, I don't think there's any secret to that either.

What's Pomlee's game like, I remember talking about him probably a year ago. Other than high potential kid with blood clot problems I don't remember much of the discussion. Anyone care to share a little more about his game?

Jon Miller has said he has a lot to prove offensivly, but he's a great athlete. Pretty much, he's very raw but had great shotblocking and rebounding abilities.
