I've always thought this would happen more often. Looks like a total mess there.

Oh my gosh. :( Do they know how it collapsed?

Oh my God!!! I took that home today at 4:45. I must have just missed the collapse by 20 minutes. How could the biggest, and most well used bridge in Minneapolis collapse?!!

That's horrible. Been watching CNN. Any idea of casualties yet?

Someone probably made a technical error and left the bridge vulnerable to collapse.

No reports of deaths yet. They said that because of the Heat in Minneapolis and the partial construction, that could be the problem.

It seems very odd to me that the entire span of the bridge would break apart in what appears to be symetrical portions...exactly at rush hour.
What do all the Civil E's out there think?

It's a good thing the cars on the bridge were not moving when it fell.

I work downtown Minneapolis & use that bridge daily, twice just today. The work they were doing wasn't related to the structure at all, just repairing the road deck....I doubt that had anything to do with it. Maybe since traffic was being diverted to only half of the bridge (both ways) around the road work put loads on the bridge it wasn't designed for? Just a guess

Watching this now on KCCI. Insane. Very bad looking video. There are going to be plenty of casualties and tons of injuries...50-100 vehicles were on the bridge at the time.

People are fortunite that the bridge fell into the river and not onto another busy freeway. This thing could have been beyond bad. I feel bad for the victims of this thing. Just minding their business coming home from work and something so fluke happens. Very weird.

I used to live in Minneapolis and took this bridge daily, as I lived and worked very close to that area. I am in complete shock, been looking at live video (kare11.com) for the last hour. As a civil engineer student, I think that this could be a combination of factors, from the construction, heat, traffic load, etc. Its too early to tell though. It seems very odd to me that the entire span of the bridge would break apart in what appears to be symetrical portions...exactly at rush hour. That's because the slab is separated by expansion joints, which are evenly spaced. Its sad that the cause of this may come down to one small thing, which causes a chain reaction to occur.
