Eric Heft is on, I tried to type what was going on. Ignore typos and anything that might be confusing.
Start talking about Mac. Eric talks about the fans losing hope in the later years of the Mac era and a change had to be made. Soren (the host) trots out the "
ISU shouldn't have these expectations" card. "Was what McCarney did as good as it was ever going to get for
ISU?"
Eric says there's a certain element that sees it that way but those tend to be the older people that have seen
ISU football struggle forever. Dan raised the bar for the program but the bar was raised for him too, not just the next guy. Most people want to take a shot at getting to the next level. We'll have to see if it is possible. Soren is still skeptical. Says you run the risk of blowing up what you've got. Runs through the close calls and asks if McCarney keeps his job with wins there. Eric says probably and brings up Berryman's suspension possibly costing him his job as well. Both are talking about what Mac is doing now and if he has another shot at a head job someday. "Depends on what South Florida does and if the right situation comes up." MAC job is mentioned.
Talk about the offense first. Soren says defense was terrible last year so offense might be a strength.
Eric defends defense a little bit by talking about the horrible positions they were put in and depth really caught up with them. Only 4 offensive starters return but there are some key guys back. Offensive line, as always, will be the key. Must be better. Eric's goal is to find something for the o-line to build on whether it's as simple as just protecting Meyer. Can they become decent?
Soren asks about the coaching and technique vs. size as the main problem. Eric brings up Loney's coaching as really good but lack of athleticism and says the technique seems to have really slipped recently even as the size was increasing. Looking for more explosive guys now. A change in philosophy with the new offense coming in. Says
ISU will model it after Texas Tech somewhat.
Soren runs through schedule now and that brutal opening 7 game stretch. Says the schedule will wreck the team. Eric says momentum must be built in the first few games and a chance to win the Iowa and Toledo game. Wants to win 3 of the first 4. First Big 12 games will be really really tough. Tigers will have chip on their shoulder. Need those wins to get bowl eligible.
Final four questions:
When has
ISU won a conference title? Eric says never, Soren says he thought it was in 1912 Missouri Valley. Eric says he was only 3 years old then...
Best place for Big 12 championship? Reliant Stadium. Keep basketball in KC, football in south.
What's the deal with Iowa drivers? No concept of passing lane? Eric laughs and says Des Moines drivers don't have that problem.
Prediction for W-L? Eric says 4-8, try to be competitive in the rest of them.
Soren says they will struggle with the schedule but he could see them upsetting somebody this year. With some breaks they can get to 7-5 but probably still a year away.
